Yesterday I was on the bus on my way back home and a fucking redneck asked and "emo" kid if he was gay with a lot of disdain. I was so shocked.. I used to live in Montreal and there, nobody would have said that... Alberta is definetely Canada's Texas! It's weird because it was the first time in my life that I was really seeing what homophobia is. It's totally digusting. Conservatives are just losers. I just wanted to punch him and to tell him "I don't if he's gay, but I'm bisexual and I'm gonna fucking kick your ass bitch".icon_evil.gif

How old was the guy? I have never spent any time in Alberta, but I heard it can be redneck, very different from the rest of Canada. In Toronto saying something like that could get you a lot of heat, we have hundreds of thousands of gay men (like Montreal).

You have my sympathies moving from Montreal (one of my favourite cities) to Edmonton.

Why didnt you speak up and confront the man? Did the kid appear to be related to the man?

I don't know... I was just overwhelmed... the other guy was like 45 years old and the kid maybe 16. They were not related... they were not even sitting next to each other on the bus.

OLD GUY? 45? Why you young whippersnapper, if I was in Edomonton right now I would challenge you to a run!

Only kidding, to an 18 year old 45 probably does seem old. Good news it isn't, the sex equipment still works, the brain still works, and I have money in the bank. Life is good. icon_cool.gif

Oh ok...I didnt see that you are 18. You arent used to talking back yet.

But even a simple "dude, chill" would've helped that kid not feel so vulnerable. I feel sorry for the kid and the damage it might have done to him.

Actually.. I'm really not shy and I'm the kind of guy who doesn't care about yelling in front of people when it's right to do so. But for some reason, I was just not able to open my mouth... I was just shocked!

I would have been shocked as well. I can understand your reaction. I heard Saskatewan is pretty redneck as well. The guy was probably just a prick. How did the kid react?

Edmonton is definitely redneck compared to much of the rest of canada. but Calgary is definitely friendlier as i remember though still full of douchy folks in their 20s. central canada, not the best place to be a homo, though i do know someone once told me they actually enjoyed Saskatchewan. apparently alot of friendly people there who really just cared about their crops, and being friendly.

Assuming that the guy was a Conservative because he was an idiot is offensive, too. No one -- gay or straight -- needs to be defined by your preconceived notions about them. I live in Edmonton, and there are plenty of assholes of every political stripe.

The nice thing about getting onto a bus in Edmonton is that everyone is a different color. This is a very young city; a cultural melting pot that hasn't been segregated into ethnic neighborhoods. We have one of the largest post-secondary populations in the country, and one of the most vibrant economies in the entire world. Alberta is not the back woods. Neither is Texas. In fact, Edmonton and Austin (where a ton of Real Jock members reside) share a lot of similarities.

If you think that an idiot on a bus in Montreal wouldn't ask a stranger a stupid question, you're mistaken. And if I characterized the entire population of Montreal as a bunch of misogynists, for example, based on the actions of some freak like Mark Lepine, you would be offended. Thus, I'm offended by your post.

I'm sorry if you're offendedicon_exclaim.gif... You can say/think whatever you want about Montreal because it doesn't offend me at all. Montreal is far from being perfect and I'm aware of it. Actually, theres no "perfect" place.

I was not trying to say that Edmonton is a bad city. The economy is really good here and it looks nice... but if you've lived or travelled to many places, then you understand that Alberta is definetly redneck.

Anyway... I'm probably moving soon!.. I want to move in California within the next year (Or maybe New York if I get accepted at Columbia).

Thanks for this thread. Now I know that if Canada ever blows apart to vote against accepting the prairie provinces into the union. We have enough rural retards in our own prairie states. We dont need anymore.
