Looking at going to NZ in 2012. Any advice on the best spots...I'm moreso interested in getting off the beaten track than visiting all the same tourist places.

I was NZ last year for about 3 weeks. Its AMAZING. I was only on the north island which was gorgeous, but I've heard the south is where all the good SIGHTS are. Also, I don't know as if it matters, but the Islands aren't that populated, I felt as though everywhere we went was small towns and somewhat remote. The cool thing is you could be at the ocean or downhill skiing the same day! Or watching some rugby, or wine tasting, or hot springs, or glaciers, etc all the time. If you wanna message me, I can make a few recommendations!

There are three areas that are the best of New Zealand - to me anyway:

Queenstown. There are tons of things to do: Wineries, art galleries, hiking around Lake Wakatipu, tennis, jet skiing, bungy jumping, and white-water rafting.

Want real peace & quiet? Rotorua - Lake Tarawera (Central North Island - about a half hour from Auckland). Check it out, if you like to get away but still want to do things like water skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, and touring by floatplane.

Back to civilization: Christchurch. This is South Island (Canterbury). If you want art galleries, balloon rides, museums, the botanic garden, golf, and the best part of the Southern Alps.
