    Should old acquaintance be forgot,
    and never brought to mind ?
    Should old acquaintance be forgot,
    and old lang syne ?

    CHORUS:
    For auld lang syne, my dear,
    for auld lang syne,
    we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
    for auld lang syne.

    And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
    and surely I’ll buy mine !
    And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
    for auld lang syne.

    CHORUS

    We two have run about the slopes,
    and picked the daisies fine ;
    But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
    since auld lang syne.

    CHORUS

    We two have paddled in the stream,
    from morning sun till dine† ;
    But seas between us broad have roared
    since auld lang syne.

    CHORUS

    And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
    And give us a hand o’ thine !
    And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
    for auld lang syne.

    CHORUS

    I like this version. Pregnant Mariah Carey bouncing around to a corny video. It's a classic icon_twisted.gif

    My mom used to make my twin and I listen to this depressing ass song every NY for our bday. Im so glad Mariah redid it and made an upbeat version so now we can kick our birthday and year off right.

    this is the original lyrics....it was written in the Scots language, which is similar to English

    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    and never brought to mind ?
    Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
    and auld lang syne* ?

    CHORUS:
    For auld lang syne, my jo
    for auld lang syne,
    we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
    for auld lang syne.

    And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
    and surely I’ll be mine !
    And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
    for auld lang syne.

    CHORUS

    We twa hae run about the braes,
    and pu’d the gowans fine ;
    But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
    sin auld lang syne.

    CHORUS

    We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn,
    frae morning sun till dine ;
    But seas between us braid hae roar’d
    sin auld lang syne.

    CHORUS

    And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere !
    and gie's a hand o’ thine !
    And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
    for auld lang syne.

    CHORUS

    Dont be an idiot, or at least give it a try; she was carrying two humans inside of her, so yeah, she gained weight.

    I'd say yes, it does work in the 21st century and well beyond. Robert Burns speaks of universal themes of friendship and companionship in his poem. Times change, but these core values don't change all that much.

    It's a tradition, at my high school, to sing this at graduation. The cynical 1997 version of me rolled his eyes the entire time while some of the people standing next to me cried their eyes out. I did tear up a little, though, when they played Puff Daddy's "I'll Be Missing You" later in the ceremony. A very dear, and young, teacher of ours died of cancer just a couple of months before graduation, and someone decided to play that song in her honor. It seems they were determined to make us cry one way or another.

    I am afraid it doesn't work in the modern age because unfortunately if someone gave out a cup if kindness it woul likely get thrown back in his/her face. Our culture is just too fast paced to stop and care like it used to. It's a nice sentiment, and one I wish we'd take to heart.

    I do think we should keep it as a reminder to ourselves that we should be kinder, but on a side note - we're usually to drunk at midnight on NYE to really grasp what the words mean. lol

    I don't know, man. I've found that there are still plenty of kind people in this world. If nothing else, this walk I'm on has reassured me of that. I walked 1,200 miles from NYC to Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It took me roughly three months, and only once did I have to sleep in my tent--at that was outside a small country church in North Carolina, after the pastor offered me dinner.

    I suppose there out there who don't know the loose meaning of 'auld lang syne' so here is what my Scottish immigrant Uncle told me it meant:

    "days long ago"

    "days long gone by"

    "long, long ago"

    "(for) old times"

    As in:

    For Old Times, My Dear
    For Long, Long Ago,
    We'll Take A Cup of Cheer, My Friend
    For Days Long Gone By"
