    SOPA represents a real threat to sites like RealJock and it's easy to see how RealJock could be shut down and targeted under SOPA. I'm crossposting it here because I suspect fewer people read the News and Politics section.

    I don't think this is a directly a question of left or right.

    It shouldn't be an issue of left or right, but much of left-leaning entertainment industry favors the strangulation because they consider it in their interest.

    To protect copyright, the movie industry favors legislation that would strangle the Internet - could pass before end of year

    To be fair there are a few Republicans who have been bought and paid for - but it will be up to other Republicans to crush them. There are already tea party activists who have started the primary fights to remove these Republicans who have been bought and paid for by the entertainment industry and who support SOPA and the related Protect IP act running through the Senate.

    It's up to those like Mediamatters to do the same to Democrats.

    As a side note, I don't think people realize how disastrous this bill would be. If it takes the left thinking this is just being pushed by Republicans and it takes their hate to topple it, then so be it... it's that important...

    17 USC § 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use
    Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include—
    (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
    (2) the nature of the copyrighted work;
    (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
    (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
    The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

    Um hardly. Look at how many amongst the left support it - but that has to do with the traditional base from the entertainment industry. It's too bad you can't put aside the snotty attitude for things that are important - but that's your choice. If that's what's required, so be it.
