Weight Lifting Gloves: To Wear or Not to Wear? That is the question.

    I've been weight lifting for 11 years now and have tried to lift without my gloves, but mentally it's like I need them to get a firm grip, safety reasons (slippage of the bar), to keep my hands from getting calluses, and from spreading my germs to others on the weights (Though I'm probably not doing myself any favors by keeping the dirty things in the gym bag). I wouldn't mind chalk, but my gym doesn't carry it and it probably leaves a mess.

    Any die hards want to weigh in on this issue? I'm curious if gloves are more of a hindrance or a benefit to your overall weight lifting experience.

    I dont use gloves. I have a few calluses but my hands are still pretty much smooth. I have felt rougher hands on guys that dont even work out.

    I wear gloves because working out with bare hands can be painful and I find if the hands are hurting, then I cant do as well.

    I use gloves and still get a little bit calloused, but not as bad as when I wasn't using them. I use Harbinger gloves with wrist wraps, only tighten them when I need to though. they are wonderful!

    I suspect some of you wear gloves to the gym simply because you feel sooooo good in them.

    I wear them because my hands can get a bit sweaty and the gloves help me keep my grip

    callouses are hot. straps are hot.

    most guys who wear lifting gloves look like they left their tap shoes on the bus. icon_exclaim.gif

    For you non-glovers - doesn't it hurt when you masturbate? My hands used to get like sandpaper - yowch!

    I've been working out for about 8 yrs. now pretty steady and most of the time I've worn gloves. Like some of the guys have already stated, I got some small calluses even WITH gloves!

    Recently I started working out w/ a guy who "castigated" me for wearing workout gloves; too "unmanly". Well, I have fallen to the "peer pressure" and have been "glove free" for about 2 months. Here are some "impressions" I'll pass on to you guys trying to decide which "route" to choose:

    a) my calluses have grown larger but I can totally "buy into" the manliness of no gloves and I'm definitely masculine so calluses aren't bothering me;

    b) I DO use chalk; I would even say that gripping, for me anyhow, is better . . . and cleanliness is perceived, if not REAL, ala the dirty gloves in gym bag sydrome;

    c) the chalk IS a mess but -- hey -- it's CHALK: it wipes off very easily;

    d) and, finally, I was one that often LOST a pair of gloves and had to continually re-purchase when lost; now that isn't an issue!;)

    Hope this helps some guys make the Glove vs. No Gloves choice!? (The way I look at it is similar to a "gi" vs. "no gi" grappling/wrestling match; I'd rather be shirtless and thus fall into the "no gi" category!;)

    Peace,

    When I was doing heavier weights I used gloves as they kept my hands from hurting too much. Whenever I do pulling exercises I use straps due to a touch of carpel tunnel, but now that I'm on the strong/lean I haven't been using gloves.

    Calluses are a bit worse now, but not bad enough to complain.

    As for masturbation, if there's a bit of skin poking me on my hand, I get rid of it =)

    Only use gloves when the weight is real heavy and the bar or dumbell digs into my callouses and hurts. Except when I bench, i feel like when i wear gloves i'm gunna drop the bar on me so bare handed only for that exercise.
