Does your gym sound like a gay porno?

No, I'm not talking about if you go to the gyms in the "gayborhood" that there are pervs hooking up, jacking off, or sucking each other off in the steam room/sauna/shower or otherwise cruising each other on the gym floor.

Basically, I mean the people that have to grunt so much and so loud that it sounds like they're taking it up the corn hole.

Now I admit, I give a little grunt on the first rep of a heavy lift, sometimes towards the end of a heavy set. But I try to keep it brief and quiet since I find it annoying, especially if I can hear other dudes over my headphones, and I usually have my music pretty loud anyway.

So this is part kvetching and part seeing if others relate, or maybe there are other gym pet peeves that piss you off?

Don't mind the guys grunting, they don't do it that loud. Except for this one guy, he grunts and moans like he's making the biggest effort EVER. It's really funny and embarassing at the same time.

Well exactly, and that's usually what it is. They aren't lifting all that heavy from what I've seen, yet they sounds like they're trying to pull a train, heh. I mean, it's obvious it's just to get attention rather than because of the effort or weight. I guess that's what's really annoying about it.

To put it in perspective, I have another gym buddy that used to be a linebacker for the state college, big dude, lifts heavy. I have never once heard him grunt despite the fact that he is lifting really heavy and putting in a ton of effort with his workouts.

Basically, a regular gym goer can tell the difference between someone who is just pushing themselves a little harder and those just trying to make a spectacle of themselves trying to get a bunch of attention.

Love the hypocrisy in that picture, specially with the highlighted "judges". A lunk ringing the lunk alarm.

That was pretty funny, but I don't agree with the Planet Fitness mentality. I'm not intimidated by big dudes, and I don't even care if it's an occasional grunt, But when it's constant and annoying (and you know it's just for attention) it gets old.

Case in point, I'm sure a guy like the one in that video probably wouldn't annoy me because guys like that are usually pretty respectful and keep it short and don't make an ass of themselves. It's usually the smaller guys, college dudes or middle aged wanna-be meatheads, that are the worst offenders.

It's like that video New Hair Cut with the guido,

(Go to about 1:48 is where the gym part I'm talking about starts. The whole thing is funny though if you've never seen it.)

Speaking of college dudes, what's up with only working out your upper body? I never understood that. It's funny to see these dudes all buff on top but with chicken legs. Reminds me of GIR from Invader Zim "It's got chicken legs!"

Okay I can't lift all that heavy weight at all so I might sound like that on my last rep when I'm about to fall over dead but I try not to be like that.

Ha ha ha. I love all this Planet Fitness bashing. I think they're a worthless establishment that tries to keep people fat or at their current state and just take their money.

My gym doesn't sound like a gay porno, more like a torture chamber. Some of the guys are just ridiculous. Dropping weights happens but screaming a guttural gut wrenching scream after every rep is a bit overkill.

I really don't pay the screamers that much mind.

If anything most of the guys there (army guys, college-age guys, and some staff and faculty) are pretty quiet with some minor grunting.

Fortunately most of the ones that are there when I happen to be there are using machines or dumbells or BodyWeight execercise; usually no competition for the squat racks or barbells. icon_smile.gif

I try to keep my grunting to a respectful minimum, I might make some noise if going for a near 1RM or new personal best.

Weight dropping ? Not sure if this includes just not controlling the weight all the way down to a rested stop on each rep, or if some clanking while doing reps of barbell rows (me)... or what I call the "power lifter drop" where someone is doing like a single rep of an extremely heavy weight for only the positive part of the arc and then lets it drop nearly from the top of the movement.

Then there is the "idiot drop" where they do it on every single rep on every exercise. Fortunately those guys are very rare in the gym I go to, and will be corrected very quickly by Colonel Busybody or one of her friends... icon_razz.gif

"the corn hole" the first time I heard that I was 11 and it still cracks me up.

We get the occasional grunter but for the most part it's pretty sane. The funniest thing is when some guy goes into labor over a set that's not even that heavy.

Ha ha. So funny and true. It seems like the less experienced guys who want to fit in will really be the most vocal.

If my gym had a "Lunk Alarm" like Planet Fatness it would never end.

That's weird. I feel the exact opposite. I just want to blend in and neither been seen nor heard.

Well it depends on the person but some guys who don't know what the hell they're doing overcompensate and make a big production of their workouts.

My gym (World Gym) recently rolled out a no grunting policy, but I laughed at it. They don't really have an issue with it from what I've seen.

Hilarious they do have a no yelling or being loud policy though, yet the four fat guys that are always there with their Tim Hortons coffees "critiquing" one another and telling the other what to do in a LOUD fashion amuses me.

Not really, at least not when I'm there (early morning). People who go at that time tend to know what they're doing and aren't making a show of it.

The showers, however, are a totally different story. Yikes!

Ok, here's a video kind of showing what I'm talking about.

Now, granted, dude is lifting pretty heavy weight, but there are parts you can tell it's just him exhaling really loud rather than a grunt to get the weight up. On the other hand, seems like he's the only one at the gym other than his buddy and the camera guy, so who knows, might be less annoying with more people around.

(I miss the days running a gym when I could have the place all to myself early in the morning)

Side note, this is how big I wish I could get, but don't know if I can afford the Russian 'roids icon_razz.gif

Side note 2, it's funny, the only music playing at that gym is Linkin Park? Odd. (I'm assuming it's a CD he brought in).

What's even more funny is those same guys taking a yoga class. They continue with the same grunting and breathing you'd believe they're trying to put their feet over their heads.

The few times I've looked over, they're usually just trying to touch their toes.icon_lol.gif
