Protein Shakes: Milk or Water?

Some protein shakes say you should have it with milk, others say water.
What about the shakes that say you can take it with either? Which do you prefer and which is better?

The current shake i'm on says you can take it with either. I mix it with milk to get the extra nutrients in it, plus it tastes better than mixing it with water.

I take them with milk when I am able to - I much prefer the taste plus like you, the extra nutrients.

When I pack my gym bag in the morning, I throw a couple of scoops in a dry Nalgene and mix it up/drink it before I go to the steam room and shower - I have to do it with water then.

Vanilla flavored water isn't what I would call tasty.

I concur with Turin. Low-fat milk is best. Otherwise you'd be drinking too much saturated fats with your shake if you made them with full-cream milk.

Low-fat or skim milk with a spoonful of psyllium husk powder. It thickens it a bit and gives you fiber, too!

milk definitely, and most taste better with it. Milk adds calories and protein which is awesome

They taste awful with water. The closest I ever got to a palatable water-based protein shake was making it with chamomile tea.

To disagree with everyone else that's posted already, I actually mix mine with water to save calories since I'm still trying to lose weight. And I don't always have milk readily available. Water is fine as long as it's at least somewhat cold. Warm water is gross, but I actually prefer the taste of mixing powder with ice water over milk. Maybe I've just gotten used to it.

If you're bulking I'd say mix with whole milk.

I've put on a considerable amount of mass by mixing with water only... never with milk

Yeah, Ive never tried it myself - but then again, at times i take 3 shakes a day, that'd be a hell of a lot of milk! Faucet is freeeee.

This. I usually mix with mostly water, but it's gotta be cold, and then maybe a cup or two of soy milk for flavor and consistency.
    Real milk is disgusting.

In the morning- cold coffee from the day before.
    In the evening- water.

Either way I add other stuff too, including nonfat yogurt.

I find that milk and other dairy products slow my metabolism and help me gain fat. I avoid them as much as possible.

    This. O.o

I actually just grind up my chicken in a blender mixed with water and drink it after my workout.

As long as it's chocolate flavored I prefer mixing it with water. It's easier to mix and easier on my stomach (mild lactose intolerance and just feeling weighed down).

Unsweetened almond or soymilk! You get the "taste" of milk and some extra calories but you don't get the sugar which can turn into fat.

I use milk if I'm just focused on trying to bulk up but water if I'm trying to build lean muscle mass. Though I agree it tastes better with milk.

Vanilla Protein + Frozen Strawberries + Frozen Mango + Vanilla Yogurt + OJ = a delicious shake.

But clearly you need a blender for that.
