MARGARET Court has been condemned by fellow tennis champions Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King after the most successful woman in grand slam singles history savaged same sex marriages.

Court, 72, opposes homosexuality and gay marriage and sparked new controversy by telling West Australian media: "Politically correct education has masterfully escorted homosexuality out from behind closed doors, into the community openly and now is aggressively demanding marriage rights that are not theirs to take."

Court, winner of a record 24 grand slam singles titles and 62 majors overall, is the founder and senior pastor at Victory Life Church in Perth.

One of only three women to win all four singles majors in the same year - American Maureen Connolly and German Steffi Graf are the others - Court urged Australians to make a stand against same-sex marriage, saying no human law could ever change God’s divine laws.

"To dismantle this sole definition of marriage and try to legitimise what God calls abominable sexual practices that include sodomy, reveals our ignorance as to the ills that come when society is forced to accept law that violates their very own God-given nature of what is right and what is wrong," she said.

"The fact that the homosexual cry is, ‘We can’t help it as we were born this way’, as the cause behind their own personal choice is cause for concern.

"Every action begins with a thought. There is a choice to be made."

Her comments were immediately seized upon by Navratilova, who is one of several high-profile openly lesbian tennis players.

"Seems to me a lot of people have evolved, as has the Bible. Unfortunately, Margaret Court has not," Navratilova told TennisChannel.com

"Her myopic view is truly frightening as well as damaging to the thousands of children already living in same-gender families.

"I have tried to talk to Margaret but to say she’s completely close-minded on the issue is an understatement."

Billie Jean King, who was Court’s arch-rival, said: "We have to commit to eliminating homophobia because everyone is entitled to the same rights, opportunities and protection."

    What a fucking pisser.

I don't know the reader demography of the Herald Sun, but the number of douche bags and idiots seem to be quite high.

Margaret Court has ALWAYS been a jackass, goes back to her days on the tennis court as well.

    Views on homosexuality

In 1990, Court said that Martina Navrátilová and other lesbian and bisexual players were ruining the sport of tennis and setting a bad example for younger players.[5][6][7]

In November 1994, when delivering a speech at Parliament House in Canberra, Court exclaimed that "Homosexuality is an abomination to the Lord! Abortion is an abomination to the Lord!"[3]

In 2002, Court said that homosexuals commit "sins of the flesh" and can be "changed".[8] She stated that when the open era started, "there was quite a lot of [homosexuality] in there" and added that "a few of the older ones ... were [homosexual]", with younger players being "sort of snared in with it".[8]
These comments were made in the context of Damir Dokić's claim that he would kill himself if his high-profile professional tennis-playing daughter, Jelena, became a lesbian.[9]

Court campaigned against laws proposed and eventually passed by the Government of Western Australia in 2002 that gave gay people and lesbians equal legal rights as de facto couples.[8] In an interview she gave on Australian television concerning the laws, she expressed a belief that homosexuality could destroy families.[10]

In December 2011 Court publicly spoke out against same-sex marriage, stating that "Politically correct education has masterfully escorted homosexuality out from behind closed doors, into the community openly and now is aggressively demanding marriage rights that are not theirs to take".[11] Openly gay tennis players Navratilova, Billie Jean King and Rennae Stubbs criticised Court's comments.[12]

I knew that Court had started her own church or whatever, so this really wasn't too much of a surprise to me. Fortunately, she is irrelevant in the tennis world, even though she holds the record for the most grand slams.

She's still salty for getting that booty-waxing from 55-year-old Bobby Riggs back in '73. Billie Jean had to show up on the scene to clean up her mess.

It would be a big help to the whole world, if the next time she meets with god, she could take a pic, so we can all see what this mysterious creature looks like. Pics or it's not real. Michaelangelo was undodubtedly on mushrooms when he got his image.

I am not even upset that Court is a douche bag bigot, she is know for that shit.

I AM upset the percentage of the reader comments cheering her on, and the fake-victim acting of "they don;t uphold freedom of speech if we spread gay hating words".

Guess what chuck? no one is stopping you from making gay hating comments, but if you have said it, and others retorts by calling you an arsehole, you brought this upon yourself. And this does not infringe your freedom of speech rights what-so-ever.

As A true Blue Aussie, living in Oz this women is of no consequence to me what so ever; she has her right to her point of view, and Martina and Billie are not Aussies so who cares what they think.

But I have seen just as much hate come from the OP, as I have MRS Court, and I don't agree with either of them or their very own brand of hate. We poofters now have access to the all inclusive Civil Unions now, so it really is a none issue in Oz now days anyways. Even if the Op is from the UK, and this allows him more rights in Oz than us True Blue Aussie poofters, concerning gay marriage.

Yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda.

There are way more important issues in Oz than Gay marriage that topic died since we got the all inclusive Civil Unions. I think the detrimental effect multiculturalism is having on my county, and all the hate and baggage so many of these new Australians bring with them to Oz, and they want to punish us Aussies for their issues of contempt and hate.

Now if we can set a precedent and send that new Australian Julia Gillard back to Wales for ten pound, for all the damage she has done to Oz, It will set a precedent to send other new Australians back to were they come, when it's found out they are no good for Oz. So immigration is more of an issue in Oz than gay marriage is.

    Long live the Queen.

One positive thing going on in Oz at the moment, is due to the Recent Royal Wedding of William and Kate, as well the Trip Prince William was to make to Down Under before his wedding. As well the recent Trip to Oz made by HM Queen Elizabeth and HRH Prince Philip has but the agenda of those ratbag republicans who want to do nothing but destructively dismantle Oz, because of their own hatful issues. Has now been well and truly been put on the back burner, and that truly good for Oz.
