I was a male yell leader for California State University Fullerton way back in the 70's. I was the first male yell leader that the university had had in just over 4 years. It was an adjustment for me and the school. Most of my experiences were very positive. I did have the typical name calling hurled at me during some of the football and basketball games. I always conducted myself appropriately. I not only was representing myself, the school, the teams but in some ways the gay community. At the end I was recognized for my bravery and outstanding contributions to the school. Some of the things I learned I have been able to apply to my life and my hobby. I can still fit in to my sweater and pants from college that I used for cheerleading! The pants are a tight fit, but the sweater fits better due to the fact that I have filled out some. I was pretty skinny, now more muscular. Except for those isolated name calling incidents I look back on that year very fondly. It was a great experience!

Thx for the info....I was too scrawny in my college days to try out and probably a little too shy, but would have love to have been a yell leader. I can see where it would toughen you up...

I went to a college basketball game recently who had a male dancer on the otherwise all female dance team. I heard some snide comments from some of the people around me, but I thought it was kinda cool! He seemed to be enjoying himself and that should be part of the college experience!

I was a Bradley University cheerleader '72-74 in Peoria, illinois.

Later became the Bradley Brave wearing the headdress, loin cloth and moccassins performing an Indian dance during the halftime.

The court was elevated off the main floor, so we had to be careful not to fall off. During practices we had a few "oops" off the platform onto the main floor. Those were "ouch" moments a few bruises and egos.
