After decades of corporate greed and corruption that have ruined the lives of so many Americans, it's no wonder people have had it with "capitalism," but numbers this stark surprised me.
It's interesting to note that the Republicans' endless shrill attacks against "socialism" are also attacks against the belief systems of Americans under 30 and black and hispanic voters -- all groups that the Republicans need if they want to expand beyond their white Southern base.

The term "capitalism" has been associated with greed, unfairness, etc., by the left leaning media sources and web sites so it is natural that the term would have some negative connotations among the particular demographics reference. The Republican candidates will likely use terms such as "free market" instead.

As far as any love for socialism, I would like to see Democratic candidates embrace that term. Probably wouldn't be too good for them.

As the US has always had a mixed economy, this tells me that more progressive policies are in the offing as the Baby Boomers leave power and the Gen Xer and Yers take over the reigns. Good.

How is this possibly a surprise? When people start paying taxes or at least a significant amount in taxes, they become more conservative recognizing that governments aren't particularly efficient at spending their money.

    Two relevant quotes:
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."

"Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has not heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains."

    Both from Winston Churchill.

The most interesting fact in the poll (found on the Politico link) is the fact that by a 66% to 62% margin - more Americans react positively to the term "progressive" than react positively to the word "conservative"!
