Three years ago I fell into the teaching field as I was laid off from my previous employer. This completes my third year as a 3rd grade educator.

I have heard that it is tough to leave the teaching field after so long and especially to transfer skills to another field of work. I am looking to get into another industry, but I am unsure how successful I'll be at landing a good job. Are there any ex-teachers out there who left the profession? How long did it take you to find a legit job after teaching? I wanna get out of teaching before I have 10 years down my sleeve and before it becomes next to impossible to leave.

Not to knock teaching at all though. It is a very satisfying job, the vacation kicks ass, the pay is ok and I'll be honest (I am making $49k), but it makes me feel very stagnant. I want something more, something bigger. At times I don't feel like a successful professional. And yes I am young that is why I am asking this question now before it is too late...

    Thanks guys.

I am surprised that 3 years is so long.

What profession were you in before you got laid off?

Without knowing anymore, I might suggest looking into becoming an Instructional Designer or Curriculum Designer. You apply your teaching knowledge to developing training for corporate or gov't employees. I can tell you, it pays way more than $49K.
