how do you know when you've gone from chub to bear? and is there a difference? what are some things a chub would need to add to become a solid bear?

Conventionally the chub has a much more disproportionately large waist measurement than his chest and little to no discernible muscle mass. The chub can be hairless.

Body hair and a fair amount of muscle mass make up the bear (chest and waist measurements are similarly proportioned), as well as a healthy layer of fat on top of the muscle mass. It boils down to semantics, really.

It's all about self identification, and if you don't believe me, cruise "Bear411.com" there's guys there that are 5'9", 250 pounds, don't know what the buisness end of a stairmaster looks like and call them selves "plump".

I don't believe you'll get many replies from this site since it really does not support obesity.

True. But, a lot of guys on here use to be "chub." Myself included.

As for labels.... Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Labels really aren't necessary.

It's not about supporting obesity, it's identifying the markers of a gay subculture.

I've always read "chub" and "bear" as being parallel categories with the key difference being that chubs are smooth and bears are hairy.

Although there are several bear sub-types; "generic" bears without a specific prefix can be presumed to be somewhat chubby.

"Big Bears" are the more exact analogue to the smooth chub and superchub.

Assuming that body hair is not a limiting factor, and that the OP is sufficiently hirsute to be counted among beardom, I'd say that the best way to describe your transformation is perhaps that of going from a "big bear" to a "muscle bear".

Surprisingly, within the big bear community, there is a strong tendency for "likes to attract". You'll see bigger bears tending to couple up with each other a lot. There be obesity fetishizing that happens as well.

Amongst (smooth) chubs who either wish to remain chubby or are otherwise comfortable and not seeking to lose weight, I think for them they may tend to attract more along the lines of the "feederism" fetish, where a skinn(ier) "chaser" is a feeder who "forces" his chub (the feed-ee) to over-eat.

So adding muscle mass and dropping some belly fat is the key to the transition. I do agree with another poster: These identifications within the subculture are fascinating. I also believe that a goatee (or, better still, a thick beard) might aid with a shift from chub to bear.

I posed the question because of a friendly argument a coworker (who now identifies as a bear despite being grossly obese and having little hair) and I had a few days ago. He seems to think that getting older--he's 30 now, and starting to get some gray hair--was instrumental in his becoming a bear. I didn't dispute the fact that he was a bear--one can apply whatever labels one would like--but objectively speaking, it seemed to me that he was talking about becoming a "daddy." Or getting closer to that stage, anyway.

And of course there's this survey data, which proves nothing but is fascinating nonetheless: http://www.studiomoh.com/fun/census/results.php

Body hair - and a full beard with moustache are the key markers for bears.

Waistline and chest over 40" also are good markers.

A goateed chubby guy with a total of 30 individual strands of hair on his chest = chub.

I briefly dated a Middle Eastern man who enjoyed feeding me in an almost fetish like way, which I thought was pretty hot but I've always had a sexual relationship with food.

    Nonono Feederism is seperate.

Chasers like bears, chubs, superchubs, maybs cubs/

Feeders feed gainers, encouragers like gainers but not feeings, and not all gainers like to be fed, they just want to get fatter.

And feeding is not all about forcing, jsut a lot of calories normally.

Yes, I've looked into many many subsets of size on guys, as I like beefy/built/muscular guys.
