Okay, its that time of year again MLK Day is comming followed by blk history month. Every time this year rolls around you will get somone on facebook or a status site say some dumb shit like why dont we have a day for gay ppl or a day for white ppl. I get so annoyed with this because all these statements do is stir up racism here is what i posted in the forum and i was being 100% real.

The status used : I run the risk of being "that guy", but whatever... Why is it that banks close and school is out and everything for MLK day, but nothing special happens for Harvey Milk day? Why is black history so much more important than LGBT history? Or women's history, for that matter? Just a question...

My response: mlk day is celebrated because of the inpact he had on the nation as one man not as a group but one man there are few men who can and will stand up against a government face jail time for no reason and stay calm and collected as he did few people of his caliber come to this planet that is why his day is celebrated and not all states celerate it or not all towns.

Gay people have no day because we cant even co exist together Gay population has old shit stirring in it racism, cast system, labels and honest most gay are fucking dumb. until gay people show they deserve rights and someone who is of a known status besides Rosie O'Donnell come forth to lead a movement noone in the gay community will hve a day. History does show gays have influenced the world through politics and inventions and we have dominated hollywood but fear of being judged has halted it. most of the big names in hollwood are gay and honestly alot of gay ppl have there own day its just that part of their life is not stated. Ghandi was gay, James Dean was bi/gay but more gay, Alexander the great was gay, and a host of others. But, you see noone not even these ppl stepped up to lead a movement for the GLBT communit so therefor no recognition and Honestly ppl who think MLK dream is reached are kidding themselves because his dream is this not seen yet. We have just settled for the bulk of it because read wht his speech stated no moatter race creed or anything judge on character he fought for equal rights for gays, and blks and whites he fought for the human race so plz noone divide what a grat person fought for just because he doesnt look like you.

Couldn't agree more, and I think a lot of this attitude comes from misplaced bitterness and confusion about who the man is.

I think some people get the impression that MLK Day and Black History Month is a "take that" to white people or something.

A lot of unspoken feelings about each other in this country.

I dont agree with defending MLK day by attacking the gay community.

Whenever I have heard this racist type of rhetoric ("Why celebrate MLK? Why not other groups?") my answer has always been:

"He was a great man with a universal message. How does it devalue me if we both celebrate you?"

The idea that celebrating the black experience somehow diminishes or devalues others is jurely racism. There is no other explanation.

I got a madd when they ask about why this group or gays dont have a day im like MLK and Mandella(sp) should have a seperate month for their fight for HUMAN RIGHTS not just blk rights. Iargued that gays dont have a day because to many gays who have a bg influence refuse to step forward because of the threat to their status. I have know doctors who were like i can be with someone out because of my status to me that makes me feel like shit because you rather hide who you are just so a group can accept you it is kinda belittling to me.

and it was not a attack on the gay community but a well seen fact look at gay forums how we have developed a cast system within the community 25 and below good looks 28-32 waist, six-pack and clean cut is the upper class loose some of these traits and you fall, but if u have money your at the top no matter yes it is in the str8 world also but only gay people enhance it more we have Fem guys being attacked just because they are confident in who they are more so then most gays. Masculine guys are held as what gay guys should be whether they are fem or not. In general until gay people can lay down their titles and labels we will never be taken seriously because we dont take each other seriously.

Sex is another think how many sites do u see that are gay orientated that are really based on finding true friends? this site is one of the few that does not have dicks and se toys advertised every screen. In my personal opinion its not the government who is holding us back but the majority of the gay community that is helping.

We don't have MLK Day in Canada but we do have black history month, which I really do think is rather important. To be fair I'd like to see some first nations Tribute days paid attention to a little more... but in addition to this.

I think anyone saying stuff like that is silly. Yes Harvey Milk day should be a little more important, but Harvey Milk, for the glorious man he was, was... not quite MLK.

but that understandable though lol. I honestly do not support Blk history month because it singles out a race and puts them on a platform to be viewed in depth and this supports and breeds racism bcause to me its American History before it is Blk History. Yes history shows the blks were treated bad very bad but so were the asians and irish when they came to America look at the start of New York and you will see pure racism. I am against focusing on one group and dividing history up and saying this is Black History its outdated and should of been integrated with American just as the school system was.

I'm in total agreement (BTW, newbie here icon_cool.gif )
But, until this country decides to integrate the many important achievements & contributions to our great nation of its Black citizenry, then Black history month will be needed.

Case in point - The many ridiculous omissions passed by the Texas State Board of Ed icon_evil.gif
