I'm conflicted about going...my mom lives about 20 minutes away, but it would be a bitch to drive to the city. I could get a hotel, but that would be expensive as hell.

I've always wanted to go and have an aunt who lives down there and could get me a room on the main street. Still I've heard it was crazy and my bother told me not to go until I have someone twice my size with me to keep me safe like he did his gf. Think it might be safer for me then a 5'6" 90lbs girl though.

Every year! Got to book a hotel by July to get a good price on the hotels... I got mine a little late this year.

Used to live there if anyone needs advice on how to be a local during Mardi Gras... It way more fun.

Quebec City has a large Carnival, but given that it is in the middle of the cold, cold, cold winter months, the theme is more about ice and snow. The mascot is a snowman and you see fur trimmed parkas instead of feather trimmed bikinis. But it is good fun and the warm booze in the "caribou sticks" can be fun to drink.

As for New Orleans...I've never been, but it is on the ol' bucket list.

Makes sense its about snow and ice... it is cold as well at this time in catholic Northern Europe, so indeed, there is very little of tropical dressing in the way that I am used to ^_^.. i becomes a big boozefest up there lol

I live here (new orleans) so i know the ups and downs of Mardi Gras. A friend of mine who DJs at Oz on bourbon invited me to their shindig but I usually go for the parades and not for the partying.

same for New Orleans, but to be more precise the carnival season in New Orleans begins on Jan 6 (Kings Day, 12th Night, or Feast of the Epiphany) and culminates on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) - a day of feasting, drinking, and ; ) before the pennitential season of Lent.

In a span of about two weeks before Mardi Gras day various "krewes" (social organizations) hold street parades throughout the metropolitan area.
