The shooter should have waited for the police to arrive.

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man who police said was fatally shot by a Kroger employee while attempting to rob an Indianapolis store was identified Tuesday as Jeremy Atkinson, 26.

Police said Atkinson went into the Kroger in the 5000 block of West 71st Street just after 6 p.m., approached a female worker in a doorway and put something to her back that she thought was a gun.

"The suspect then forced the victim to the office area, where he encountered a second employee who fired a weapon at him, striking him in the face," Indianapolis police Sgt. Linda Jackson said.

Atkinson was taken to St. Vincent Hospital, where he later died.

Customers scrambled to the back of the store in what was described as a chaotic scene.

"I heard, 'bam, bam, bam.' I said, 'Oh no, somebody got shot,'" said witness Catherine Jefferson. "Everybody started running all over the store."

Dispatchers fielded multiple 911 calls after the shooting.

"I heard three or four shots," one 911 caller said. "I'm in the bathroom. I work here."

"They are shooting in the store," said another distraught 911 caller. "I don't know if somebody got hit or not. There was customers in the store, and everybody started running."

Police interviewed store workers and said they didn't expect to make an arrest.

The Kroger store was closed for several hours in the aftermath of the shooting. It reopened at noon on Tuesday.

Atkinson was released from prison in October 2010 after an armed robbery conviction. He also had a prior conviction on a charge of possession of a handgun without a license.

Sorry, but I am confused by this as the headline contradicts the story below which says, "Police interviewed store workers and said they did not expect to make an arrest."

This is where my conservative side shows up !! Good for the worker that shot the Robber, even if it turns out it wasn't a gun he was poking in the back of the clerk. If a robber wants to act like he's got a gun then he should be treated as if he had one and be taken out quickly, for the sake of everyone else that might be in danger. Don't have much sympathy for a robber threatening the lives of his victims.

Now Paul, I was being sarcastic. You know I'd have blown the fuckers face off long before I called police.

Oh the sarcasm didn't come across. I expected the story to be about the title.
