It is called "STREET VIEW".....gives a 360 "drive by" view from the street.....kind of a neat toy....looks like a number of the bigger metro areas are covered. oepn GOOGLE MAPS, click on the STREET VIEW button and a video window will open .....play with it and take a virtual tour of some city that you want to visit!... The aerial photo in google maps is about 2 years old, generally. The street view video seems to be generally less than a year old. Fun to play with!icon_cool.gif

Yeah, it is pretty cool. Like someone standing in the middle of the road with a cam.

I usually have to walk through an area of town before I can say I know it well enough to drive through it without having to think about where I'm going, but now I can do that without leaving the house. I already got a good portion of Phoenix and Scottsdale mapped out in my head, and I've never even been there.

    Yeah, I love it.

I discovered a picture of my neighbor walking her dog. So, I told her so she could send the link to her family and friends.

hahaha i saw this awhile back on the news-they had included Fort Bragg, i think, or another major military base. the reporter showed how you could located doors and exit points and stuff....Google had to have talks w/the brass after that. (I recall a rumor that they had also experienced something similar to this w/the initial release of Google Earth-a friend who studies aeronautics said they had caught a number of sensitive planes on the ground in the UK for example)

sorry, no sources to back it up but i thought it was pretty funny that they actually thought it'd be kosher to map a military base w/the current social/political climate.

So Friday, I was checking the 360 views from back home and came across my Mom's house. That pic was obviously a few years old as the trees were noticeably shorter. Then I checked my Dad's house that's about 5 blocks away and noticed that the pic is only a few months old. To top it off, my Dad is in the photo on a ladder working on the side of the house!!! Unreal!

I use that all the time at work. Someone will call up, complaining they got a parking ticket when there was not a No Parking sign posted. Just fire up Street View and tell them exactly where the sign is.

    They love that.

OMG! I just checked my grandfather's house, my only surviving grandparent, and he's standing outside in front of his house! This is too cool!

    New?

Street view has been around for over 2 years (may 2007)

But yes it is great, and they have added some amazing features. Great for looking for apartments.

I think I saw a story for some swanky neighborhood in England and the residents chased the google camera guys away cuz they had had some robberies and thought the street view would only facilitate more robberies.

    Here it is...

It does not go into private roads. I live behind gates so it stops at the gates.

Well, there have been a few stories where the Google Maps cars drove into private roads and driveways. So, a warning to everyone that lives rural areas.. if there's no gate, then they will drive up private roads and driveways.

I've used it a number of times to help me to identify an address I needed to find, can work very well. Especially to scope out things like city parking and where the entrances are, etc. I have GPS, too, but that gets me to the spot only. Knowing what it actually looks like beforehand can be useful, too.

It's awesome, I took a virtual tour of my old neighborhood in Tokyo and it was almost like being there again, walking around. As Red Vespa said, it's very useful if you want to identify a building or address before hand.

I've played around with it before, I googled my address and the picture that popped up was the driveway in front on my building and my Jeep outside the front door... kinda big brother isn't it??

It's pretty cool. They've had the Boston area on it for over a year now. Kinda creepy to find your own house on it. Just used it last week when my husband asked me where a particular hotel in Boston was. I was able to say "look, it's right across the street from the theater we went to 2 weeks ago."
