90 Day Old Mail on RealJock!

I wasn't online on the site much since November, but I noticed something recently, now that I'm back more often.

When I'm on a guy's profile, and I want to view the mail history of our previous conversations to pick up where we left off chatting, the mail history would be missing. I thought it was a profile glitch or internet malfunction, and ignored it, but I just discovered something in the Mail section of the site.

Listed at the bottom of my Inbox is a message that says 'Messages more than 90 days old will be deleted.'

Is it me, or is this a new policy? I liked having an archive of my messages to people, but now they're gone, and I had no chance to back anything up anywhere!

    OH NO!

It wasn't always like this! When and why did it change?

It happened a couple days ago, no warning was given. First they downsized it to 180 days of retention (without warning) then 90 days (again without warning). Pretty shitty policy.

I didn't appreciate it, but I had 2,600 mail messages sitting here. I quite deleting things a while back and it probably makes sense to have a deadline. I just have several hundred now. I was like, "what the hell happened". LOL

It was in fact previously announced a month earlier. The effective date was supposed to be in December, but members asked for an extension, and it was moved to January.

Admin also provided a way for us to receive an archive file copy of all our emails upon request. Unfortunately this is in a non-delineated text format, with all the emails running together in a solid block. I haven't attempted to figure out how to break out the individual emails yet.

But I don't recall the change to 90 days retention, I too thought the originally stated time was 180, so that must not have gotten much notification and chat here.

I didnĀ“t like it and would have been much happier with a total allowance so I could chose to save special messages. But that was not offered...

Hmm. Like I said, I wasn't online much. Didn't have the chance, so I guess I missed the notification. I didn't see or hear anything about it.

I can understand that with server cost and everything, it's costly for the site to store so much data, but I still think it's important to let us keep the mail that we deem important.

Anyway, thanks for the replies! How am I able to request for one of these archive things? It'd be a bit helpful at the least.

Get over it you email hoarders. icon_wink.gif On my site old emails are deleted after 45 days. If you can't keep up a conversation with someone at least that often, then there probably isn't much there. If for some odd reason an email is that special to you, print it out when you get it.

The request for an archive copy appears at the bottom of the mail Inbox screen. However, I believe it only includes mail currently available, ie within the 90-day window.

Therefore, if you didn't request an archive copy prior to the Jan 17 purge date, those older emails are gone forever.

The announcement was on the first page of your realjock inbox for a couple months before it happened

I saw the 180 day warning. I would have rather seen a link to save the messages to text as I didn't know that was an option. I don't need the old messages, but had I not acted first (taking a lot of time), I would not have gotten a couple of email addresses from those messages before they were deleted.

Even if they were a big block of text, MS Word can be used to replace certain characters/phrases with New Paragraphs or even changing the colour of headings with 2 Find & Replace operations.

    This makes me really sad.

Should I send a help mail to RealJock, just in case?

I can't print out stuff. My parents will find it, and I'll be doomed. I was trying to keep everything related to my being gay on just this one site.

I had been planning to copy and save my important mails a few months ago, but school's kept me SO busy, I had absolutely no time to go through everything.

You should assume that everyone hotlisted you and then removed you when you started acting crazy.

Well, I'm not exactly out yet, and my parents don't approve. My dad likes to scour the internet for names, and I don't like to take risks. Also, we don't have Thanksgiving where I live.

Oh dear, I hope I don't sound like that! I was doing my best to be civil!

And just to note, they do have advertising on the site (the Spartacus thing now is especially noticeable), so it's not like they're broke (are they?).
