I've recently noticed that my belly is getting bigger and bigger and I don't exercise much. I don't go to the gym because of my anxiety. I have a treadmill at home and I wanted to know if does running really help you lose weight because I recently heard people in my family say running doesn't help you lost weight and then next week they something completely different.

umm... before you touch a dumbbell or a treadmill, you need to pick up a book on the science of weight loss and what a healthy diet is comprised of.

^ Trollileo's right. Cardio does great in dropping fat, and weight lifting does well in developing great muscles, but your body is made in the kitchen. Look up what a healthy diet looks good, and then experiment from there. Some people can eat whatever they want and still look like a model, and others (like me) pretty much have to go perfectly paleo. Good luck.

the more you sweat the more you lose , there are active thing you can do to lose weight without exercise , tho if substantial weight is to be lost exercise will be inevitable also anxiety doesn't help , try to relinquish that with meditation or herbs like valarian , st johns wort. kava kava ,even chamomile.

Tea, Oolong aka Wu-long is great for all cardiovascular errors, and contains polyphenols, inducing whats called thermogenisis there by causing fat oxidization by up to 5% ,
any and all spicy food with allso help with losing weight
obviously be mindful of what you eat , the saying "you are what you eat" is shown to hold up =]

for weight /portion control , there is Yerba Mata, often used in teas and commonly found in South America, the herb contains high amount of caffeine, that is absorbed much like a "Time released " Pill because yerba mate contains other agents that slow its absorption and studies show it curbs the appetite , however i would suggest caution in the "Not eating to lose weight " idea lol , your metabolism requires exercise to maintain proper and highest efficacy

Yes, any physical activity will help you lose weight. Using the treadmill is great. You can also lose more weight by strength training, meaning working specific muscles. Also, diet is important.

For the record, you don't look overweight though,icon_smile.gif

Don't go supersonic with the running (or elliptical etc...). There is an optimal fat burning heartbeat rate. More than that and you'll start to catabolize muscle; less than that and you're not burning as much fat as you could be.

Lift weights. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn just sitting around doing nothing. Ask any guy that is trying to break 200 lbs and eating a strictly clean healthy diet. He's either stuffing brown rice in his face every minute of the day, or cheats and eats less healthy choices. Its pretty hard to "get fat" if you're truly eating healthy and preparing all your food, barring health problems.

Knowledge is power. Get a book on this stuff and start reading! You'll need to read up on proper nutrition and fitness sciences.

As for your anxiety, it's something you'll need to get over. I know I was damn nervous when I first started going to the gym. I got over it by continuing to go. Eventually you'll feel comfortable.

Like my grandpa told me when I was fattest.

"Mijo, you need to push away from the table."

Essentially: Stop eating like a refugee.

Eat healthy and exercise. I almost can't stand it when people ask me how I lost weight, as if there is a secret that I'm keeping to myself.

LOL, thanks, but that picture was taken in early 2010, I'm not really overweight, it's just that my belly is beginning to stick out more.

Thank you everybody, I'm going to start exercising on Sunday and then regularly weekdays as well. In the meantime I'm going to be careful with what I'm eating.

Thank you, you guys are the best.

icon_idea.gif Work off more calories at the gym than you consume. Between a 30 minute intense cardio workout, and 30-40 mins weight training it will definitely work. Even if you any have 3 to 4 days in the gym and on your off days you dont eat too much or eat junk.

    Good Luck.

To lose weight, you just need to burn off more calories than you take in. Any kind of physical activity will help to burn off calories, as will dieting (reducing your caloric intake).
