Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke died on Thursday, more than a week after she was injured during a training run in Utah.

Burke suffered a ruptured vertebral artery while training at the Eagle Superpipe at Park City Mountain Resort on Jan. 10 and was sent to hospital with severe injuries.

Hospital officials say that the injury caused a hemorrhage and Burke went into cardiac arrest at the scene. She later underwent surgery to repair the torn artery that caused bleeding on her brain.

Burke was a four-time winner at the Winter X Games, and was considered a pioneer who became the best-known athlete in the sport.

    She hailed from Barrie, Ont.

She died at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City at 9:22 Thursday morning, the family's statement said.
