(AP) NEW YORK — Facebook will start requiring people to switch to a new profile format known as Timeline, making photos, links and personal musings from the past much easier to find.

Timeline is essentially a scrapbook of your whole life on Facebook, compared with a snapshot of you today found on Facebook's traditional profile page. Once activated, Timeline replaces the current profile.

Although some people have already voluntarily switched to Timeline, Facebook hadn't made that mandatory. Beginning Tuesday, Facebook is telling some users that they have seven days to clean up their profiles before Timeline gets automatically activated. Facebook is rolling out the requirement to others over the next few weeks.

At some point, even those who haven't logged on to Facebook in a while will be automatically switched.

I been using it for a month or so now, It look great but not very practical, my eyes went all over the page didn't know where to look at. Especially the 2 column entry, kinda confusing.

they didnt force anyone to join in the first place, just saying

I've been using the timeline for several months and like it much better. Yes, it is in two columns, but if you look closely, it is much more organized and easier to locate items. Once you get accustomed to it, you will like it.

It took a little getting used to (just like anything new), but I really dig timeline.

It looks daunting, but it's really not so bad once you start playing around with it. I'm certainly used to it now. Plus it's been kind of fun to read a bunch of my old posts from years ago.

This. It's also much easier to read other people's old posts from years ago, which may or may not be a good thing.

I like Timeline too. It is great that you finally don't have to scroll to the bottom, click on read more posts, and wait FOREVER for the next messages to load.

I have no problems with the Timeline, I welcome it.

I remember when people bitched when they changed to the 2nd format (the one where you could have apps on your page) or when they added chat.

I think it's confusing to look at. Your posts alternate left and right of a vertical timeline. It makes it hard to find stuff you posted because your eyes have to scan back and forth and down rather than just Down.

These companies are going to screw themselves by constantly changing features that people have grown accustomed to. It makes the user feel like they have less control over their online experience.

I like timeline. I also like the map tracking of where uploaded photos came from.

I think the timeline is cool. I don't get why there is so much resistance to it. There seems to be this talk about 'old' postings being easier to find. Umm.. so?
