Proposed; Since fat is a hydrocarbon and thus can be burned, it is proposed that overweight and obese Americans should undergo liposuction and the material thus removed should be converted into a bio-"lipo"-diesel.

This will help alleviate the fuel shortage and get rid of un-wanted pounds.

Hmmm...babies are mostly fat, too, aren't they?

Yes...yes they are. Babies and fat people are clearly the answer.

Should be a shot in the arm (or poke in the belly) for the Mississippi economy.

No. Put them on treadmills and feed the energy created back into the grid.

Here in TX, they're often the ones consuming all the petroleum hogging fast food and driving the gas guzzling SUVs, so it's their civic duty to recreate the energy they hoard and consume.

    ...or something like that. ;-)

(idea stolen from a long-ago post)

I think babies are mostly water and methane. Great for fuel cells, I'd think.

    This topic is absolutely disgusting.

Using fat people for fuel? When we can use them to feed the starving children of Africa?

    Such a waste.

I'm just saying use their fat only. Think of the marketing: "Put a tubby in you tank!"

Theres more then enough to feed the starving and fend off the fuel shortage!

Oh hell, we have so much squishy here, you can lay back and relax while its happening too, just mind the falling burgers and fizzy drink! (umm soda)

No way lilTanker. I will not sleep while Australia is the fattest nation. I will eat tirelessly until America is right back where we belong as the top of the list!

Why don't overweight people (or everyone, for that matter) start riding their bikes or walking everywhere, thus improving their physical fitness and reducing carbon emissions at the same time? Who cares about burning their fat for electricity, make 'em burn their own fat for the good of the planet!

Oh medford you and the others think you are joking but this has not only been proposed but is actually being done in Miami according to several websites...

"At the 2007 Gas and Oil Expo in Calgary, two keynote speakers introduced as representatives from ExxonMobil and the National Petroleum Council (NPC) addressed the specter of Peak Oil. “Without oil,” NPC’s Shepard Wolf warned, “at least four billion people would starve.” In order to “keep the oil flowing,” he suggested, “we need something infinitely more abundant than whales.” Wolf’s solution: It’s time to consider transforming dying humans into biofuel."

These two supposed experts ended up being two pranksters but the article later goes on to admit that:

"Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital has signed a deal to supply Norwegian entrepreneur Lauri Venoy with 3,000 gallons per week of liposuction leftovers. Venoy figures each 3,000 gallons of biofat will produce 2,600 gallons of biodiesel, sufficient to fuel a Hummer for a week."

Personally I think that human fat would be one of the smelliest of energies...

    LOL!!!

Once there was a Sci-Fi short story (can't recall the name or the magazine [i.e. Asimovs]) about the latest version of starship drives requiring fat people to power them. You fly off to the stars fat, and return skinny.

It was hilarious. Like this topic is also humorous.

On the serious side, how many watts of energy could be fed from an exercise machine into a household battery system for later use?

If Jonathan Swift were immodestly proposing today, he'd surely say so, and swiftly.
