St. Louis - How safe is it for gays?

I am moving next weekend 2/5/12 to St. Louis for work. I have heard a lot of scary things about the city. I have also heard that it is pretty fun and the statistics are a bit blown out of proportion.

I will be moving to the CWE (Central West End) and heard nothing but great things about it.

So, have you lived there or live there currently. How gay friendly is it? Will I have to take my PDA down a notch? Also, do I really need a gun or just know my way around STL to make sure I avoid trouble?

    Thanks guys!!!!

You'll be fine and CWE people shouldn't bat an eye at you being gay. Saint Louis gets a shitty rep because of North Saint Louis and the crazy East Saint Louis. Other than that, you are peaches!

How can you afford a place in CWE?

You will love the CWE. Check out Delmar Loop and Clayton, too. The Grove is where most of the gay bars are located. St. Louis is a really fun city.

As far as gay-friendly. It is just a normal city. I wouldn't go making out in the middle of the mall, but feel free to be yourself.

Also, you won't have to worry about crime, it is not an issue. It is just like any other city -- there are just certain parts that are poorer. The north part of St. Louis is rough, and E. St. Louis (which is in Illinois) is rough too. You won't ever need to go there though. Basically, keep the gun at home.

Enjoy your time in STL! icon_biggrin.gif

If you're moving to the CWE check out Drussels for some really good food. As far as crime, like everyone else is saying, it has its trouble spots, but by and large it's fine, particularly in a gentrified area like CWE.

Hey thank you guys! I will def. try out the places you guys suggested.

Also, housing prices in CWE are somewhat comparable to prices in Denver, where I am from. So, I find housing super cheap even in the CWE.

I heard it isn't as bad as the press makes it to be.

I am actually very excited to move to STL.

I dunno about St. Louis, but I live in Missouri, and where I live is very conservative. But, don't let it bother you...as long as you're happy, people shouldn't get to you around here. They don't with me.

Yes, I have been told not to cross 70 lol. I lived in Denver and feel that this city is super gay friendly!

I am sure I will make the best of it.

St Louis just like the rest of Missouri is pretty conservative. When I visited that city a couple of times, I was not all that impressed in fact most of the central city and many of its first ring suburbs were pretty rundown and didn't look all that safe or inviting. Most of the economoic prosperity and new development was situated in the outermost suburbs bordering on suburban St Louis County. Keep in mind that the City of St Louis is an independent city which means it is not part of any county. The city's decision to permanently secede from St Louis County in 1876 only worsened the central city's urban problems in the late 20th century and early 21st century. When it comes to gay friendly locales, St Louis is among the last places to come to mind.

Yeah, please don't believe all the negativity that the "gay community" tries to put forth about places other than their usual hangouts. I've been all over the USA and really, there's nothing to be afraid of out there.

I wouldnt say there is nothing to be afraid of out there, but any city you go in you are bound to find a safe haven. That being said, I would probably be scared to be with a guy in Georgia for fear of being fag dragged...

Missouri's is tolerant in some of the bigger towns/cities, but if you go out and just scream flamboyant in the style of dress. You'd probably get some looks. But that's in any city.

I lives a few hours away from St. Louis in a city named Springfield.

I'm no Party/Scene/Person, so I couldn't tell you any clubs to go to up there.

It's pretty cheap to live here.

Then you are restricting yourself unfairly. Such a shame so many gays are afraid of things that are not at all in line with reality.

Not really. I wouldnt say the only safe havens are the hubs but if you literally think that no one out there cares about gay people then you are...well...an idiot (we all ready knew that though). Fact of the matter is St. Louis will be fine, but not all spots are as progressive in that matter.

Purchase, learn to use and carry a firearm.

Then you will be safer wherever you go.

St. Louis does have its problems, but overall you should be fine. It shouldn't be any more dangerous for you than for anybody else. Like others have already said, there are certain areas that aren't great, but I don't know if you'd have any reason to go to them except to drive through occasionally. The Central West End is one of the nicer sections. St. Louisans, even the more conservative ones, can be pretty friendly as long as you're friendly to them. The same goes for St. Louis County and St. Charles.

Did someone actually tell you to bring a gun based on stories or is this a joke?

St Louis was actually rated as one of the 10 "gayest" cities by some prominent magazine (I forget which one).

It also hosts the largest gay pride celebration in the Midwest outside of Chicago.

I've lived in St Louis for almost 6 years. While it doesn't necessarily have the feel of larger cities, it's been a great place to live. The CWE is nice. I would also throw out Lafayette Square as a nice area to check out.

As far as PDA goes, I wouldn't go nuts. I think I've all the city is fairly progressive, but it does adhere to the modest Midwestern values.

As for safety, like any city, it varies by location. I used to live two blocks from projects and it was actually the safest I felt. If you've lived in a lny other city, just keep in mind smart city behavior and you'll be ok.

    Welcome!

Unfortunately for you, St. Louis is as unsafe for gays as the rest of the USA, with the "safe haven" exceptions being New York, Washington DC, Boston, Wilton Manors, Key West, West Hollywood and San Francisco.

If at all possible, only stay in the "safe haven" areas I have listed above. You are taking your life into your own hands once you stray from the safe havens.

I feel like in places like New York, DC, and maybe even Boston, you are more likely to get mugged IN GENERAL regardless if you are gay or straight, so I wouldn't necessarily call these places safer than other cities in the US. I have a friend from St. Loius and he seemed to like it there so it most not be too bad.

Sounds like the consensus is that smart city behavior is required!

Like I said, I am very excited to move!

No need for name calling - please try and do something about that thin skin of yours.

I was responding to your comment:

I would probably be scared to be with a guy in Georgia for fear of being fag dragged

which is an unfair characterization about Georgia.

lol you mad brah? Im not name calling, Im just stating facts. Cant handle it, then GET OUT!

As for an unfair characterization of Georgia, again, stating facts...

Not at all safe. Gays are summarily executed upon entering the city.

You should be fine, that part of town is a nice area. Like most people have said, St.Louis is like any other city. I have family there and it can be referred to as "A little Chicago." certain parts of town should be avoided after dark and etc. Certain parts of town can be extremely fun. Just use basic urban skills and you should be fine.

    Have fun in STL!

Well...for calendar year 2011 there were 114 murders within the city of St.Louis. That's down from 131 in 2010. As with most urban areas, there is a color to crime. I shall say no more.

    Be wise in St. Louis.

Oh, New York and Chicago? Our liberal bastions had 490 and 433 murders respectively in 2011. Burglaries, assaults, and other assorted crime are 100 times greater than the murder rate in both cities.

I've lived there my entire life and never really stepped foot out of North County. My luck I guess because everyone make it seem like a great place.
