One of my favorites is Edmund White's A Boys Own Story as well as its companion 'The Beautiful Room is Empty'. The final of the trilogy, 'The Farewell Symphony' was good but didn't move me as much as the first two.

Tales of the City has a special place in my heart.
I also really liked Rubyfruit Jungle and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

This book was pretty good; written by Anne Rice's son. The meth makes it kinda scarey in a skin crawling kind of way.

I'm not sure that I have a favorite. One that comes to mind is William Mann's "The Men From the Boys," and its sequel.

Oh, I see I'm behind the times. Inevitably, it's a trilogy now:

My favorite gay novel is Andrew Holleran's Dancer From the Dance. It's astonishing how much it's pre-disco era nightlife mirrored my own life in the late 90s party scene. Each time I read it, I annoy my partner by forcing him to listen to passages that feel like they are written about my friends and me.

A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood. Beautiful prose. The movie directed by Tom Ford really does the book justice.

Every summer I reread the Tales of the City books.
I also love Vintage, by Steve Berman, a gay ghost story with a goth and vintage fashion angle.

I haven't read any of these, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned Giovanni's Room, by James Baldwin. Just Above my head is my favorite book by him, and it has an important gay component, but I'm not sure I'd classify it as a gay novel per se.

The Folded Leaf, by William Maxwell. Strictly speaking, it's not a gay novel, though one of the main characters surely is. More a portrait of a relationship. One of the most beautifully written novels I know, and one I'll continue to re-read.

For some reason I can never bring myself to read any romantic novels in general. I feel so dirty for it lol.
