I've just started watching it and constantly skip back to listen to some of the things the Dowager Countess let past her lips. Love the show. And I'm not fussed about all the hoha about historic acuracy. Favourite moment in the show must be when Daisy sabotages the meal when Mrs Patmore is away and how it all turns out for her. Starting season 2 soon and then getting xmas special from a mate.

Then watch the film Gosford Park (10ish years ago??) Same writer, set about 15 years later, Maggie Smith in the same role. Downtown Abbey was written for her.

Is this on American TV now or something? I've seen the whole series up to date. The last Christmas special was great!

According to the "Which character are you..." test, I'm the Dowager Countess! icon_razz.gif (but I still think I'm Mary)

Maggie Smith's portrayal of the Dowager Countess is my Grandmother to the T...Looks, accent, demeanor.....Of course Grandmother takes it as the biggest compliment. LOL!
Just finished the 1st season while staying atop the 2nd!

Love. I didn't watch the first series until last month when they ran it on Sundays leading up to the second. I'm gonna go through major withdrawal when this series is done.

Completely hooked on this show. My sister asked me over Christmas if I'd seen it yet; when I said no, she went out, bought the first season DVDs, and we watched them all in one day. Following season 2 now on PBS, and even though I know a couple of spoilers already (boo!), it hasn't lessened my enjoyment of it. Hope they air the Christmas special over here sometime as well.

I also read yesterday where they are set to start production on the third season, and that Shirley MacLaine has been cast to play Lady Grantham's mother.

We're watching it and we don't know why. Not that the show is bad... I just really don't watch TV. Everybody was talking about it and season 1 is streaming on netflix right now.

One question... I know Thomas is gay or at least bi, but in Season 1 episode 3, does Bates really out him to the father? When the hot Turkish guy is visiting, Bates makes a comment to Robert when they're alone about how jazzed up Thomas is about it. I couldn't tell if he meant he was into him or just eager for the chance to be someone's valet vs. just a footman. Getting conflicting opinions on Facebook.

At our current consumption rate it will be months before we are looking for season 2.
