My workout routine is pretty brutal, especially for the past year. I had my first massage two weeks ago -- a deep tissue massage -- and even though it was kinda painful when the guy was working on me, I felt great after and had a fantastic week in the gym. So good I went back last weekend, and I'm having an equally great week in the gym.

So... for guys who have intense workout sessions with lots of weight/resistance training, do you have sports or deep tissue massages to improve your performance? And how often? Once a month? Every couple of months? Couple a year?

I had a superb masseur who gave me an excellent deep tissue massage every Saturday for 1.5 hours, but he decided to move back to Brazil so now I'm looking for a replacement. It's costly but it's worth it. I don't think a weekly session is necessary, but 2 times a month might do you some good. Choose someone who's certified and has really strong hands. There are tons of masseur/masseuse wannabe's around that don't know what they're doing so choose wisely.

Anybody in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area that wants a professional, deep tissue massage from a very strong guy, let me know. I'm glad to see you're learning the benefit. It's hard for me to believe there are so many guys out there working their bodies hard and NOT getting massages to recover!

I get a deep tissue massage every three weeks by a guy who knows how to zero right in on whatever the issue is. It's not your typical "feel good" massage, but it does feel good afterwards.

I love massage and am always amazed at how my massage therapist can do a quick assessment of my back and then go right to the spots that need work without me saying a word about how I am doing or feeling. The benefits are real and it just feels good. I echo the sentiments about going to a CMT for deep tissue work -- not just some joker who is gonna rub you with a little lotion.

I've only had one, but it was about as high end as it gets. I had a valet accompany me to the dressing area where he stood over me as I got naked and handed me my robe and slippers to lead me to the masseuse. That part was...awkward. The massage was so good I almost cried at the end.

It's a hugely important often missing aspect of muscle development. Once s month for me.

Its one of the few things I will miss about San Francisco, my free massages with happy ending. Oh the horror!

    I work at a spa..

And although I don't get massages often enough (i'd like to do at least once a month)... it helps SO MUCH with muscle recovery / progress. Definitely should be getting them... we have tons of clients who are weekly / bi-weekly that obviously workout a lot. Massage = win

The massage was a gift (no way I could afford it myself) so I didn't have much say during the whole experience. I didn't like that I was wrapped up like a mummy and only the individual parts that were massaged got exposed at any one time, though.

I'd be happy to put these sore muscles in the hands of anyone capable.

Yea that was weird... I was totally wrapped up too. The guy still did a great job so I didn't complain.

For those who have experience with massage, should I stick with deep tissue? Somebody told me I should have a sports massage, which I looked up and seems to be more stretching than squeezing out my muscles.
