Iceland is known in part for its natural geothermal pools, which are mostly free of chlorine or other chemicals. Because of this, they emphasize the importance of bathing thoroughly before going in. This article talks about how baffled Icelanders are by Americans' reluctance to do so, pointing out that one can't really get clean while already wearing a swimsuit.

As I recall the Blue Lagoon had private showers, but I guess some of the smaller municipal facilities don't.
