Fess up time: Stupid things you've done at the gym

On Wednesday, I was at the start of my workout (Strong & Lean, Week 6, Day 3 to be exact) and I was doing the first exercise of the first Workout Sequence (Alternate Hand Kiss Wide-Grip Pull-ups) and I tried to lean over to change the weight on the Gravitron, and a rammed the left front of my head into the tricep handles. It really shook me up, and I've got a big scar along the hairline. I've had some headaches, but I don't think it's anything too bad.

So, what gym blunders have you done?

Like you, after doing a set of reverse triceps pulldowns, I leaned over to up the weight. I TOTALLY forgot the t-bar I was using is heavier than the 2.5lb plate on the rack. Needless to say, the t-bar crashed down on the top of my head. icon_redface.gif

This started at home first. I made the mistake of eating right before going to the gym, met up with my gym bud and we hit the stair machines. After that I wasn't feeling so hot and had to run for the closest trash can. icon_redface.gif

I did swallow my pride (no pun intended icon_rolleyes.gif ) and went back the next day. I guess it's like swimming, wait some time before diving into your workout.

I was running on a treadmill.

I stopped to tie my shoe

I did not stop the treadmill ...

Luckily no beltburn, but the way I fell off I ended up hitting a big window and making a nice thud.

The best part was my uncle laughing VERY loud and people looking icon_biggrin.gif

Another time I was waiting for my cousin in the lounge of the gym. I was sitting watching the big screen TV. Apparently I fell asleep in a position that made it look like i passed out. The personnel were getting ready to call an ambulance.

Mine came during the same workout program. I can't remember which exercise it was, but it involved balancing on one leg while reaching somewhere difficult and twisting...and I fell on my ass in front of a bunch of hot guys. icon_redface.gif

    Once during a dumbbell pullovers

    dumbbellpullovermg2.jpg

I noticed people giving me weird looks as they passed by me looking down. Unlike the picture, only my shoulders were on the bench the rest of my body was held up perpendicular to the bench with my feet planted on the floor. Afterwards, I asked my workout buddy if he ever feels that people are giving him weird looks when he works out, and he laughed and said "dude, your pubes were showing". During the exercise my shirt would lift up, and since I hadn't pulled my pants up before doing the exercise, I had given people a free show of my trail/pubes icon_sad.gif

I'm sure I do many stupid things at the gym unconsciously, though I've only really hurt myself once.

A group of hot thugs at my old gym walked by while my buddy and I were lifting. I thought that they had gone down to the free-weight level, but in truth, my back was to them, so I didn't see that they were directly behind me. To my utter horror, I uttered these words out loud:

    "Give me some thug lovin'"

What's hilarious is that they thought that my buddy, who was facing them, was the culprit. Not much came of the incident, but we got dirty looks all night. We both took care in the parking lot for the next few weeks, b/c these guys are actually bouncers at a local bar. icon_redface.gif

Once I tripped on the stairs to the fitness floor.....going up the stairs!

Another time, I'm using the Smith machine and racking the bar with 45lb plates. I take the plate off the post and the stand up and then YANK! The headphone chord got caught on the post and I broke my headphones.

And then just recently, I was in the locker room and picked up something off the floor and when I stood up, I hit my head on the locker door, causing a large bump to form going across the top of my head. Hurt like a bitch.

If there's a prize, this should be a top contender. A friend of mine invited me to work out with him at a gym he frequents that I don't visit, until this first and probably last time.

After a bad work out, the place was packed and super setting was a lost cause, so I just got on a machine and camped out on it like everyone else until another came open. It wasn't a great experience, or work out and then I decided to go to the steam room. I always go naked with a towel around myself, until I get into the steam room. So I walk to the door to what I thought was the steam room, there are other people there, some fat guys. I see the steam room door, another one, so I remove my towel and there's no hooks available, damn it! A guy motions me over and whispers something, I can't quite understand, I have some hearing loss from the Army. He speaks louder, "This is a Coed area". I look around and an old woman is staring and smiling. OMG! I wrap up and get out fast.

Not a big thing...but one still feels kinda stupid...

When I first started working out with my personal trainer, I would just follow him around rather thoughtlessly, and altho I dont remember which machine it was, I sat down at it backwards. He had to tell me to turn around. Like I said, it isn't the worse thing possible, but it still doesnt make me feel like the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

There are some great posts here!

I have two incindents. The first was last year, I was doing the bench press and on my last rep, for some odd reason, my left elbow would not fully extend the last 1/2 inch up so that I could rack the weight! After many attempts, I had the bar over my chest and someone came over to help. It wasn't heavy, but it still looked bad.

The other incident was a few years ago when I was playing basketball with some of my cadets. I was moving upwards and someone was coming down with the ball and their elbow slammed right down on my forehead. I immediately put my hand over the impact zone and could feel a bruise grow like a Wile-E-Coyote cartoon injury. It knotted so big and so fast on my forehead, it wasn't even funny. I never knew a bruise could swell so fast like that.

I've been known to drop weights because I was looking at a guy instead of looking where I was supposed to put the weight. This happens on a monthly basis.

This was back in 2000 I think. I was setting up for DB bench press. I think they were 80# DBs. I kicked them up to my shoulders from on top of my knees and from there tried to lay back on the bench. My ass wasn't evenly distributed on the bench at the time. Once my shoulders got down to the bench my enter left side was hanging way off the side. I couldn't balance the weight and did a complete 180 off to my left and face planted on the ground. I popped up real quick but thankfully there was nobody else in the weight room at the time so I didn't have to play it off.

More recently in 2007 I got hurt doing a bench press with a barbell. I had 3 plates a dime and a nickel on each side. I've benched 335 on my own before but I had a spot watching me the entire time. I looked around and there were other guys in the weight room but nobody I knew. I figured whatever I've done this weight before I'll be fine. I started off strong came all the way to my chest made a solid contact and started pressing up. I go about 2 inches off of my chest and realize I was spent. I tried to explode and get the bar onto the lowest hooks only about 2 inches higher from where I was at that point. I was able to get the left side on but not the right. The bar came back down resting on my neck/ collar bone. There were collars on both sides so I couldn't slide the weight off. I struggled with it for about 3 seconds and decided fuck it. I yelled for help while being strangled by the bar. Thank God this dude about 12 ft away saw me and saved my dumb ass. The bar left a nice strawberry on my collar bone but that's about it. It's sad but I'm still shy about asking guys I don't know for a spot.icon_wink.gif

I'm posting on behalf of a hot guy in a tight-fitting wife beater who was at our gym, this evening. As he was finishing up a set on the bench press, he didn't quite hit the bar rest on the return, and he ended up dropping the bar to his chest, and he needed help getting it back up. (Pun sort of not intended.) Unfortunately, I was two seconds too late to be the knight in shining armor.
