How many of you RealJock members have taking the Fish Oil? I have taking it since six-years ago. You guys can find it at Sprouts or Trader Joe. I was looking at this David Beckham's video on youtube about Fish Oil. I love him so much.

I do use Omega-3 Fish Oil though, along with Probiotics and a high fiber diet. It's a healthy thing to do.

I take Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil. It is supposed to be a really high quality fish oil. My PT recommended it. I find that it really helps with inflammation, too. I jammed a finger working out. It got all stiff and painful. Took a tablespoon of fish oil and it calmed right down.

What can high-omega-3 foods do for you?

• Reduce inflammation throughout your body
• Keep your blood from clotting excessively
• Maintain the fluidity of your cell membranes
• lower the amount of lipids (fats such as cholesterol and triglycerides) circulating in the bloodstream
• decrease platelet aggregation, preventing excessive blood clotting
• inhibit thickening of the arteries by decreasing endothelial cells' production of a platelet-derived growth factor (the lining of the arteries is composed of endothelial cells)
• increase the activity of another chemical derived from endothelial cells (endothelium-derived nitric oxide), which causes arteries to relax and dilate
• reduce the production of messenger chemicals called cytokines, which are involved in the inflammatory response associated with atherosclerosis
• reduce the risk of becoming obese and improve the body's ability to respond to insulin by stimulating the secretion of leptin, a hormone that helps regulate food intake, body weight and metabolism, and is expressed primarily by adipocytes (fat cells)
• help prevent cancer cell growth

What conditions or symptoms indicate a need for more high-omega-3 foods?
• Depression
• Cardiovascular Disease
• Type 2 Diabetes
• Fatigue
• Dry, itchy skin
• Brittle hair and nails
• Inability to concentrate
• Joint pain

Salmon, flax seeds and walnuts are excellent food sources of omega 3 fatty acids.

Research indicates that omega-3s may be better absorbed from food than supplements. Norwegian researchers compared 71 volunteers' absorption of omega-3s (EPA and DHA) from salmon, smoked salmon, cod (14 ounces of fish per week) or cod liver oil (3 teaspoons per day). Cooked salmon provided 1.2 grams of omega-3s daily, while cod liver oil provided more than twice as much: 3 grams of omega-3s per day.

Despite the fact that the salmon group got less than half the amount of omega-3s as the cod liver oil group, blood levels of omega-3s increased quite a bit more in those eating salmon than those taking cod liver oil. After 8 weeks, EPA levels had risen 129% and DHA rose 45% in those eating cooked salmon compared to 106% and 25%, respectively, in those taking cod liver oil.

In the group eating smoked salmon, blood levels of omega-3s rose about one-third less than in the salmon group. In those eating cod, the rise in omega-3s was very small.

Concurrent with the rise in omega-3s in those eating salmon, a drop was seen in blood levels of a number of pro-inflammatory chemicals (TNFalpha, IL-8, leukotriene B4, and thromboxane B2). Researchers think omega-3s may be better absorbed from fish because fish contains these fats in the form of triglycerides, while the omega-3s in almost all refined fish oils are in the ethyl ester form. Once absorbed, omega-3s are converted by the body from their triglyceride to ester forms as needed. Lipids. 2006 Dec;41(12):1109-14.

My mom used to drinks Flax seed oil right out of the bottle. It was disgusting. My dad and my grandpa used to drinks Olive Oil. I have seen some people do that.

My massage therapists says she can tell when i have not been ingesting enough oil.
I'm going to take it fish oil and olive oil regularly to see if i can feel a difference.

A friend of mine took Naproxin with 2 times my dose, which caused bleeding in his colon, and almost killed him before the doctors realized how badly he was bleeding internally) SO IF YOU HAVE INFLAMATION TROUBLES TAKE FISH OIL INSTEAD !!!! It initially takes a month or so to start working for you so be patient. THANKS AGAIN CASLON !!!

But I've read somewhere that to really benefit from Fish Oil one should take at least 3 grams (3 pills) a day. But doesn't such high dosing requires Omega 6 oils to balance out?

No no no. Apparently the omega-3 fatty acid thing is a pretty big issue given that we should be having an ideal 1:1 ratio of of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid intake. The article linked below covers some good eating tips, and under #3 Peanuts it explains how many foods contain way too many omega-6 acids relative to how much omega-3s we typically intake (without supplements). The average American diet usually has a 20:1 or 50:1 ratio As a result we're creating risks for ourselves in getting 10 common diseases including "Alzheimer’s, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes." Check out the article; it's pretty practical and user-friendly.

I just saw this posting, Reallifedad. I am glad to hear that the cod liver oil worked out for you....both for the inflammation and so you could get off of the Naproxin. ...

I would just add a strong "word to the wise" -- be sure that the fish oil product you are taking is confirmed to be free of mercury and other pollutants. The bottle will either say something about being purified or "Molecularly Distilled."

Also, I would suggest starting with one capsule a day, and working up to your target level (whatever you figure that out to be, after talking to your Dr) over a few weeks. Starting with 4 capsules a day when you're not used to it may give you diarrhea.

Lower doses are good for general heart health -- 1-2 capsules daily.

Higher doses (4-6 grams daily) help with the full gamut that Caslon listed above.

Do you really feel that your skin gets too oily from taking the fish oil? I know of a guy and I think his skin gets that way too. I know he takes a lot of fish oil. I can even almost smell it on him when I'm close to him. I thought perhaps it was another reason. But it's interesting to see that someone like ActiveAndFit make mention of it.

I take Fish oil capsules as well as Flax Seed oil daily

One piece of advice though: go to your doctor and ask for the prescription version called Lovaza (formerly Omacor.) It is pharmaceutical grade stuff free of mercury or impurities, and has typically twice the EPA and DHA of any over the counter version you can buy.

So what other supplements does everyone take on a daily basis, just outta curiousity??

Yeah, I have naturally oily skin anyway. Oh well someone said that is why I look younger lol. I use the deodorized variety. By the way, you can take too much. If you have clotting disorders the medical community discourages it. It can also increase the likelihood of hemorrhaging.

I'm glad you posted the medical warning. My partner is a hemophiliac and I was having him take fish oil along with me until I found out fish oil is not a good thing for people with clotting disorders.

Yeah its always good to google. Sometimes what is perfectly harmless to most people could be bad for others. There are lots of other anti-inflammatory foods and herbs that may be OK. Maybe you can google those. There is also another forum topic

Of course there are other reasons people take fish oil, but there are always alternatives. Always read up on herbal and supplement precautions .. here is a good site

Re Omega 6 (and also Omega 9) fatty acids: my understanding from things I read is that these are so prevalent in the typical american diet that taking additional supplements of these fatty acids can be toxic. All we need to supplement with is Omega-3.
