I spent 2 weeks traveling from Townsville to the tip of queensland. Went scube diving also on a week long boat trip. Cairnes is a nice city. Very safe and tropical. They have a large Japanese tourist industry there. Many Japanese companies own a lot of the shops there which I'm sure the Aussies don't like. Guys in Cairnes seem to work out (keep in shape). I met one of the best looking and very muscular guys in Cairnes while there. It made my vacation the best ever. There are some country folk that you have to avoid. Just like some of the uneducated or ignorant people you run across in the US. Gay people are very accepted in Sydney and Melbourne. Less in the north but still probably more than in the US. Good luck. I wish I could pick up and move there. I love it there. And nice people from what I came across. Also note that Australia in the main cities has a large immigrant population too. Lots of Asians, Greek, Italian, German, Indian, etc. etc. They are not happy with all the new immigrants but they have to deal with it like the rest of the world.

Well if you don't watch your step in some places, you might be eaten by a crocodile.
Where in Queensland? It's a very big place - over 2,000 km north to south.

    Hey! Welcome to Australia.

I'm not a huge Gold Coast fan - it's a tacky tourist wonderland - but hey, Jetstar means it's only $49 and an hour and a half to Sydney or Melbourne icon_biggrin.gif

Don't forget to pack a rowboat; it's nice when it's not raining.
h take care of the Drop Bears too; out around dust onwards.

    Enjoy the Gold Coast

You will be fine the Gold Coast isnt dangerous, we have a dry sense of humour.

There are dangerous animals around but you will rarely see them and if you do you will know to keep your distance.
