    Oh God, those bolded parts...
Anyway, if I had to pick one, I'd pick Madonna, just look at her past and you'll have plenty of reasons.

Laday Gaga needs to be thanking Madonna for her career.

Madonna hands down. When Lady Gaga can do what Madonna has done and last as long as she has then we'll talk.

    Ohhh, gay boys.

There is a difference between a pop star and a legend, kids. Madonna was not just a gay boy icon -- in her heydey many many different demographics liked her music. She was all over pop radio, black radio, underground, dance. She wasn't controversial and "weird" for the sake of being controversial and weird. She actually had something real -- and groundbreaking at the time -- to say about sex art, feminine control, and the female role.

Gaga is not there yet. Gaga has three, maybe four songs that anybody will still be listening to in twenty years. Madonna has 20+ songs that were classics in their days and are still classics now. Madonna is the WORLD's top-selling female artist...ever. She is the Billboard chart's most successful solo record act, male OR female. All of this is for a reason. Gaga calls Madonna "The Queen" for a reason. Madonna one of the few modern pop artists who is also a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer for a reason.

Gaga is the (gay) flavor of the moment, but in terms of history, influence and across-the-board industry impact, there is no comparison. Not even close. I like them both -- and a lot of other female artists -- but no no no. No. And no.

This is like comparing Natalie Portman to Meryl Streep. Or Justin Timberlake to Michael Jackson. Or Mark Zuckerberg to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Or Barack Obama to Abraham Lincoln. I know it's cute to get caught up in the moment when you're 18 years old, but let's get real. Madonna has being doing this for 30+ years. Before gay was cool, during the dark days of the AIDs crisis, Madge was a friend and champion. Let's think before we speak.

    Madonna

    Reasons:
Has made the most amazing pop videos of all time.

Is the world's best female live performer.

Has a body of work any pop artist would kill to have.

Behaves in a way I expect my idol's to behave ( i.e doesn't pander to them).

Has a really beautiful voice, especially on her ballads.

Lady Gaga is still too green and the Madonna comparisons are unfair.
At this point in her career Madonna had given us Holiday, Lucky Star, Borderline, Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Crazy For You and Into The Groove.

Gaga's only real classic is Bad Romance. She has the 'potential' to be as amazing as Madonna but she's got at least 20 years to prove she can do it.

I read this great scholarly article that basically said Madonna is the greatest charity of all time when you consider how much money people give her to do what is mediocre at best.

I'm not ragging on Madonna, but I don't think you can seriously say she has a great voice or is a great dancer. She is a marvelous entertainer and sells the product that is herself. There's nothing wrong with that.

Gaga can actually sing (I wouldn't say she can dance). And whereas Madonna is an entertainer, Gaga is more of a performance artist. It's interesting to note how they differ and yet get lumped together based on shock value. Madonna made her name on sex and Gaga is pretty much asexual when you consider her image. Of the two I find Gaga the more talented when it comes to singing and more complex when it comes to an overall artistic statement, but it really depends on what you want out of each of them because neither markets herself purely as a singer.

And for the record, Madonna stole just as much as Gaga did. To say Madonna is original, would be an anachronism.

I'm sorry, but it's Gaga, and Gaga only. Madonna has chosen to ruin her own image. She's a fuckwit, Gaga is so good to her fans and all other artists! Is always civil and caring. And respects Madonna and even thanked her for her influence and so forth and NEVER BITCHY!

Except that one time early in her career, which I can understand. Her fame was overwhelming. So hell yeah to the power trip.

All Madonna has to say is she's

    "Reductive"

Soon as those words came out of her mouth all I got was bitter old hag whose clinging to the fame of her youth. She can't sing, she's only "Talented" because people write songs for her. She'd have no clue without them. She has a couple of good songs, but with the release of her new single. WTF? IT'S SO GENERIC!

Give me all your luvin' VS Paparazzi.

    Ain't no competition.

She sucks, Gaga rules vocally and talent wise.

She doesn't do all her crazy antics for nothing, it's for individuality and equality.

    They are both extremely talented!

Madonna is in fact a legend of pop music. But Lady Gaga has seen a meteoric rise to fame. As with Madonna's overtly sexual imagery of the Erotica era, Gaga has some stuff that turns people off as well. People who put down Gaga because of her image are very strange indeed.... failing to see that Madonna has done shocking things in the past. I think those that critique her image also are failing to see her talent in terms of dancing and singing. Madonna is/was a great dancer, but lets be honest, her vocals were not the reason she became famous!

In any case.... shocking image....That's the way they both have sold some records, but not ALL their records! It's called ENTERTAINMENT!

I see them as very different artists, given their age difference and styles.

Gaga is just beginning, so we'll see where she goes. I have no doubt her career will be a long one, but it's going to be a lot for her to make the same impact as Madonna has in terms of the music and entertainment industry.

    Love 'em both!

The biggest mistake Gaga made was appropriating some of Madonna's imagery .
She was doing so well with her first two albums and it's like all of sudden around the time of Alejandro she decided to raid the Madonna vaults.

She betrayed herself because like other posters have said, she and M are completely different artists. It comes off as false and cheap. ( Like WTF did she hire Steven Klein to do that video ?!)

Imagery wise Gaga has a lot more in common with people like Marilyn Manson/David Bowie than Madonna. She's really a rock and roll artist.

You and I is the real Gaga. Born This Way is Gaga trying to be Madonna.

    nice explanation there calibro

I know Madonna is great but can be irritating! Gaga is fantastic but can be over like over-clocking a processor till it burns!

base of these explanation above and my view...

    ill go with a 3rd choice..icon_biggrin.gif

    Either or is so limiting.

I can like vanilla and chocolate ice cream, as well as strawberry, rocky road, french silk, caramel swirl, coffee, mud pie, etc etc.

Thus, I can enjoy Madonna, Lady Gaga, Xtina, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Chrissy Hynde (thank you!) Debbie Harry, Pat Benatar (bitch can sing!) Gloria Estefan, Whitney Houston pre-crack, Bjork, etc etc etc.

But I understand the need for youth to establish the importance of their own at the expense of the predecessors. It's human nature.

Both Madonna and Gaga are talented and loved by millions. There is room in pop music for both. I understand why they are compared, because they both are similar in that they took chances and enjoyed a meteoric rise to become world-class superstars seemingly overnight. The one thing Madonna does have over Gaga is longevity. It remains to be seen if Gaga, like Madonna before her, can keep reinventing herself to remain relevant and sell CDs and sellout concerts over decades. I tend to think Gaga will be around for a very longtime. I wouldn't be surprised if she eventually gets into movies too, as I think she would be an interesting actress as well.

*slaps his forehead* OMG this is even a debate/topic of discussion. So incredibly sad...

    From Wikipedia
"Madonna has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and is recognized as the world's top-selling female recording artist of all time by the Guinness World Records. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), she is the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century and the second top-selling female artist in the United States, behind Barbra Streisand, with 64 million certified albums. In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked Madonna at number two, behind only The Beatles, on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists, making her the most successful solo artist in the history of the Billboard chart. She was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the same year. Considered to be one of the "25 Most Powerful Women of the Past Century" by Time for being an influential figure in contemporary music, Madonna is known for continuously reinventing both her music and image, and for retaining a standard of autonomy within the recording industry."

Lady Gaga has a long long way to go....

I will say something for Gaga, for her age, she's very sophisticated and intelligent.

Whether it's a product of the internet age or just the fact that she comes from a rich family her taste is usually impeccable.

It took Madonna years before she really started to work with higher end concepts, whereas with Gaga, it only took her one album.

I had a feeling that the fact that Madonna and Lady Gaga are going on tour at the same time was going to start World War Gay between Team Madonna and Team Gaga. The Mayans were right....2012...end of days.
