Can you tell someone has been taking steroids just by looking at them?

Are there any visible signs? Do they only show up after years?

There are common side effects of steroid usage which are visible to physical inspection. The problem is these side effects could also NOT be related to steroid usage, so you have to be careful.

But if you see someone with acne everywhere, their jacked and have some other signs.. well its hard to not think they are on steroids. Generally its the size factor that tips your opinion toward steroids...but remember these guys gotta start somewhere. It stands to reason there a plenty of people on steroids who are not jacked, or are simply just taking them without the other modifications (increased training, proper dieting etc.,)

Thats the reason you throw in some tests with the "basic" lab work to find out icon_razz.gif

If i see a muscular guy with a heavily acneed (sic) back, i often assume he's juicing. May be wrongly, but thats stereotyping for you...

Yes, there are signs that are painfully obvious to everyone but the one doing the juicing. icon_eek.gif

There ARE physical indicators that steroids have been abused, but obviously it varies from person to person. Aside from the acne scars already mentioned, there's "roid gut" and "bitch tits." Roid gut is the rock-hard distended sixpack prevalent in pro bodybuilders, mostly tied to the use of Human Growth Hormone.

There are way too many variables that come into play to systematically determine whether someone is using steroids or not. Some guys are naturally and genetically more muscled than others, so people sometimes believe they are on steroids. Other guys have very slight frames naturally, so even when they take steroids people believe they are "natural". Then there is the number and dose of steroids they are using. Then factor in the number of years a guy has been using, the longer guys use the easier it is to figure out that he's on roids. But there is no black and white way of determining.

Yes, some cases are very obvious. But I'm always surprised by the number of guys who say they are on roids or have been on them and I would never have guessed they were. And there are others I could have sworn use them but they insist (and it's impossible to say if they are telling the truth or not) they are natural.

Plus steroid use is VERY taboo. There is a huge population of users who will never admit to it, here or even in private with people they know and trust, because it is a topic that provokes very opinionated reactions from people. There are lots of people out there who have very strong opinions against steroid use and who will not hesitate to make them public, so a lot of steroid users will simply keep mum to avoid the hassles and the lectures. Plus lots of them would rather everyone think they are "natural" because they are shy or ashamed to admit they use steroids.

Even here on RealJock if you were to do a poll of who had tried them you would never get the true answer.

I always wonder when I see guys at the gym, especially the really big ones, if they've taken them. But then I feel bad because there really is no way to know for sure and making that assumption based on nothing except some acne really isn't fair when most of them have probably just put in years of hard work and eating right. Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with taking steroids, but I do think achieving a big frame without them is definitly more of an accomplishment obviously.

Well, OP, of course you can!

They just do all of those tests on athletes and have those long court cases for fun and show and to keep the lawyers from retiring in poverty.

Sometimes, you can tell...and sometimes you can't. However, the more you interact with those who, actually admit it......you learn to see a difference, in the skin tone, and the over all look. I have never taken any anabolics, or prohormones, but I have trained with many athletes, who have,. Some admitted to usage, and some lied. I have had people acuse me of lying, as well .and I take this as a compliment...I think lol. If you see someone get very big, and very strong, way to fast, that's a tell tale sign. If you see someone acting super agressive, in the gym...that's a sign as well....but some people just act that way...or maybe they are a jerk and taking anabolics, as well lol I know 1 thing, ...every person that I've known, to take steroids....eventually stops lifting , and gets fat. It's very difficult to get big and ripped, naturally, after you have cheated with steroids. I've had partners, pass me like I'm standing still, with .anabolics, regarding development...but slow and steady and natural, leads to longevity. I also have ocd, so steroids, would have killed me....but I would have been pretty big, before that!!!

Look at his thighs/quads; it's one of the fleshiest areas on a man's body. If his skin is thin like paper with prominent veins, it's a good indicator.

Some people had freak genetics can archieve above others very easily w/o roid. But if a 35 yrs old with plenty of acnes I think it likely that he juiced.

The only way to know is to ask that person. I've met a couple of very cut, thin guys who were prescribed steroids in very minimal doses, whom do not look like they have used steroids in their life. Then there are the guys who work out particular groups of muscle, and forget about things like the core, that completely look like they use steroids, and do not. But there is some things to observe; injection sites, mental issues, and body composition. If you really think about it, most of us consume foods that are already treated with hormones, and supplements.

If you research about men and aging, many of the symptoms to steroid usage are visible just with aging like; breast tissue, abdominal fat, and etc.

I've also asked a bunch of guys at the gym, and they actually drink creatine throughout they're routine.

If you are uncomfortable asking that person that particular steroid question, just ask "So how exactly did you get the way you are?" or "What type of supplements do you use?"

People come in all sorts of different sizes. Muscle size does come into play with age. Some find it easier to gain muscle in the later 20's than when they were in their teens, and some find it harder to gain muscle later compared to their own teenage years. Unfortunately it was, and still is hard for me to gain a single pound of lean muscle. Look to your parents, my dad didn't start gaining large amounts of muscle till his 30's, and my mom was very thin until her 30's.

I have a friend who has placed quite well in some bodybuilding competitions. He insists that he's "natural" . . . but I find it highly unlikely, he's gigantic. It amuses me that HE (who is so obviously using) won't admit it, but another friend of mine who is barely bigger than me freely admits to cycling. And tells me that a LOT of his friends and cousins do steroids (they're second generation Russian-American). But you would never think so to look at them, because they're not huge. They're just guys who lift maybe one or two times a week, but the steroids make them look a bit more dedicated than they actually are. It's weird.

SD, what this freak has done to himself is not the result of steroids. That's Synthol oil injections that literally inflate the muscles with oil. I'm so disappointed in you, SD. You should know better.

lol, he has the size, but no strength. thats ridiculous.

    Hi all.

SPEEDOBODY, you made good points, I agree on all you said.

But there is a lots of ignorance regarding the steroids:

    THERE IS 20 DIFFERENT KIND.

Not all aromatize, nor produce pimples.

Do you think Madonna doesn't use them.... Primobolan, Anavar, Winstrol...

Lastly I am pro steroid use and am working to promote legalization, education and responsible use.

    This is NOT AAS.

This is the absence of both myostatin inhibiting genes.

I agree with you, basing a decision on a little acne isn't enough although it is a sign and so it the really thick, huge, really pumped look with a penis in the locker room or showers that is always either semi erect or throbbing hard! The only side effect of roiding and one worth livigng with on the way to gettting huge if you ask me. Since the first time I saw a bodybuilder at the age of 12 and my cock went rock hard and I jerked off until I was raw lol, I knew I wanted to be freakin huge and stronger than Superman when I grew up. I didn't get serious about it until my mid 30's at which time I read everything I could about steroids and educated myself, bought my first cycle (make friends with the big boys,9 times out of 10 you are correct, they are on roids.) within 6 months I went from 138lbs to a huge ripped superman strong 198lbs! I began getting the hugest pumpes, my strength went thru the roof along with my already high sex drive! I could'n't and still can't get off enough! I am raging hard 24/7 when on a cycle and gettting off 11-12 times a day! LOVE IT! The huge, mind blowing muscle gains along with the dramatic strength gains are out of this world and roids can be used safely while getting freakin huge! I love all the attention, lifting insane weight! Roid users still have to lift hard and heavy in the gym and work hard to get huge it just happens faster. It's not like poof! You do an injection or take a pill and wake up with huge muscles! At first I was shy about it but now I love the line of married muscle dudes and gay muscle dudes approaching me in the shower begging me to flex while they jerk off, feel how huge I am getting and even sucking my cock before heading home to the wife. I want you to know, every word I have written here is true. It has been my experience with muscle, roids and getting huge. Like I said, they can be taken safely while getting freaky huge and stronger than Superman!
Roids aren't for everyone but I believe the decision should be solely up to the individual. Not the government, not some jealous guy at the gym, no one but me. I know this comparison is not quite the same but if a woman can have an abortion (which I believe is her right. She has to answer for it before God not me and don't do it on my dime.) I can decide what to put in my body including steroids.

I am not asking this to give you a hard time or be a smart ass, actually I find it a turn on but why do you look at guys and wonder if they use steroids? Are you like me and find it a turn on that guys who do are fucking hot? Shows me they want to get freakin huge and stronger than Superman also! Nothing like the feeling of growing so huge and so strong! You will never regret trying them! Or does your looking at a guy in the gym and wondering if he is on roids peek your interest in maybe trying them yourself? I hope so!!!!!! It's your decision to use them or not. I say do them, you will never regret it and be blown away by how fast you make mind blowing muscle gains along with your strength and sex drive going thru the roof! You already are a hot man. I hope nothing I Have said has offended anyone here and if so, I apologize. If I have made many cocks hard, I am really happy as hell!

    Best,
    Russell

Your exaggeration is more of a turn-off than the muscles are a turn-on. Do steroids make you lose understanding of words like "true" and concepts like "24/7"? Being raging hard that long would give you health problems in an extreme case of priapism.

I asked the question because of hearing guys say "so obvious that guy's roided up" and wondering how they are able to tell. I'm not for or against drug use; it's the owner's body to use or abuse. I am, however against abuse of the exclamation point, and wish you the best of luck in overcoming this addiction successfully.

    Superman wouldn't take steroids btw.

Considering the side effects of steroid use/abuse I couldn't date someone that self obsessed or deep into a drug; that I wasn't in love with or deeply involved with, unless they quit first; or quit later... yeah.

Can I tell? Hell no.. I can't tell who the ones who lie and do take it, that those who say they do, but I just haven't happen see "warnings signs" enough to consider asking, are. icon_sad.gif
