I am 20 pages away from finishing A Feast for Crows. This is one of the most addicting series I've ever read....and I apparently didn't like fantasy.
What parts blew you away that you didnt see coming?
Most shocking scene was the infamous Red Wedding (no spoilers). I literally threw the book across the room and waited several days before picking it up again. That was the moment I realized I had no idea what this story was about and where he was going with it.

Realizing that I pity the Lannisters almost as much as I used to hate them. All three of them are such sad, sad creatures.
welshmonkey saidI'm worried if I start they'll take over my life - and I haven't got time for them right now. Maybe in the winter when the weather's bad (well, when the weather's worse than it is now)...
rollingthunder2828 saidFinished all the books so far; however, wasn't a huge fan of the "minor characters" book.
I will say it seems that Martin is falling victim to what other LONG fantasy epics fall to--too many side quests and characters. Yes, Martin kills off characters at whim but they are usually replaced right away.
My favorite moments from the series are as follows (I'll try not to make them too spoiler filled)
1. The Red Wedding
2. Cat Stark post Red Wedding
3. Tyrion's affinty for crossbows
4. Jon Snow at the end of Dance with Dragons
5. Quentyn Martell's ability to steal a dragon
