And a controversy: Gov. Christie ordered state flags to fly at half staff today generating a firestorm here. Once facebook page has a picture of Houston and all the NJ servicepeople who died in Iran & Afghanistan and simply says REALLY?!?!

    +1

When MJ passed I was upset about it but Whitney's death really hit closer to home. I didn't cry nearly as much when MJ died. She really felt like family and I could have easily met her. I grew up in the same part of Jersey as she did and many of my aunts, uncles, cousins have seen/talked to her many times and they all say she was sooo real, loving and down to earth. That's why I can't why people are so disrespectful to someone they've never met or who has never done anything to them. Who the hell is anyone to judge her?? She was human and made mistakes. Everyone has struggles but her being a celebrity makes them known around the world. I LOVE you Whitney from the bottom of my heart and will miss you soo deeply!!

honestly i think there is some element of race involved in this. like white people are all like MJ died? child molester. whitney died? crack whore. but when elvis and john lennon died, it's a big deal.

    just keeping it real.

I think Whitney Houston was a real inspiration to religious Christians, the "Black community" and those who belonged to both categories. Personally when I hear all her songs I find them haunting and genuine. New Jersey's decision to fly the flags half masked to honor her is okay with me. People who go to war for America are not the only people who inspire America to be what it is.

Funny thing is xanax and alcohol killed her, not illegal drugs. And what else is the media going to fawn over, the war and/or turmoil in Afghanistan/Libya/Egypt/Palestine/Greece/Iran? Yahn...let's give Whitney some attention for once.

When I found out MJ died I was with two white people who commented he was a child molester, that they didn't like him, and that they were happy he died. I quietly left and cried in my car.

Btw people pointed out that Amy Winehouse was a huge drug addict even after she died. It's not all about race.

It's sad when anyone dies, but Whitney was a pretty big influence on the black community (and other communities too). Respect is necessary.

That's because she wasn't relevant enough for anyone to truly care. She was around for like three years.

Amy Winehouse is not Whitney or Michael Jackson

Oh my bad. I guess people can make fun of Amy Winehouse, a white person, simply because she wasn't popular enough to fit into your racist-schema that all dead White celebrities are lauded and all dead Black celebrities are shunned. Because Whitney Houston received legitimate backlash a decade ago for legitimately fucking up her life with drugs you'll simply assume no one or ahem....no White people care about her, despite the news and radio stations covering her like she's the next Michael Jackson death for a week now.

You know what I hate about the posts in this thread? There's stupid White people who are ambiguously racist. And then there's stupid colored people who are ambiguously racist. As a result I just fucking hate all of you people, regardless of your color.

There's no more reason for me to post in this thread. Whitney was a great person and a great singer. That's all I need to say.

I agree a lot of black people and colored folks were not as sympathetic to Amy as they were to Whitney, which in my book is hypocrisy.

And Jake, reply to my message please.

I'm not seeing much online reference to the issue, except in blogs. Any links to media outlets discussing it?

Well, John Lennon was murdered so its a bit different.

Also, Im not sure how you can say race plays in to it. No one lowered flags at half mast when Lennon died. MJ had huge televised tributes to him. If the implication is that when a black entertainer dies its treated differently than when a white one does, that doesnt ring true with me. It sounds like race bating just for the sake of doing it. Elvis was dragged through the mud for being a druggie and fat and to suggest Amy Winehouse was not viewed as a druggie who did it all to herself ala Whitney is false.

In our current world of tabloid journalism, everyone who dies is going to be scrutinized. Their skin color has nothing to do with it. Its about money. I am sure when people like Charlie Sheen or Ryan O'Neill die their issues with drugs will be well documented again.

This is the same governor who thinks gay marriage harms his state more than "Jersey Shore" right?

Oh please. I'm one of the least likely race baiters you'll ever meet. Period. You just don't understand and that's okay. You'll never have to.

Let's keep it really real. There are PLENTY of BLACK PEOPLE who said or are saying, "child molester" and "crack whore". And there are PLENTY of WHITE PEOPLE who mourned MJ's loss and are mourning Whitney's.

AND. There were PLENTY of people who said things like, "fat pig", "he deserved it with the prescription drugs and eating habits" when Elvis died, not that you'd know because you weren't even alive then. And Lennon was murdered, and his life wasn't tainted with such stigma-generating issues like MJ and WH.

Amen to that! I get so tired of all these knocks taken at such an inspirational person.. such lack of class
