Pinal County Republican Sheriff Paul Babeu - a stridently anti-illegal immigration activist - has been outed as a homosexual.
But that's not the juicy part.

It's been revealed that he carried on a years long sexual relationship with a Mexican boyfriend.
And when the relationship ended Babeu told the Mexican boyfriend that if he didn't keep his mouth shut about their relationship he would have the ex-boyfriend DEPORTED!

    JEEZE.
Just when you think the Repubs can't sink any lower - they DO.

Why is this presented as though somehow the revelation that he's gay AND against illegal immigration is some incompatible concept worth pointing out? How stupid. being anti-illegal immigration and also coincidentally gay are not mutually exclusive. Gays and "immigrants" are not "allies" fighting for the same cause.

On the matter itself, he's one lowlife individual if he threatened to deport his ex for outing him.

Is the mexican boyfriend a citizen or resident I wonder?

As I clearly stated - the "juicy part" of this story is not that he's gay - even though lots of Repubs in AZ will definitely have a problem with it.

The juicy part of it is the fact that he used the powers of his office to try to threaten and intimidate his ex-boyfriend into lying about their relationship in a desperate effort to try to stay in the closet and continue living a LIE.

This is a clear case of abuse of power and Sheriff Babeu should be forced to resign immediately.

Rick said that's not the juicy part. Stay focused, Mock.

The point is that he is a Sheriff, a top level position of law enforcement, yet he may have actually harbored an illegal immigrant. This is all happening while he professes to be an advocate against illegal immigration.

The boyfriend was born in Mexico but is in the US on a visa.
However Babeu deliberately misled the ex-boyfriend into believing that his visa had expired and that he could be deported.

Oh what a tangled web of LIES!

Whether he had a legal visa or not Babeu's actions are breathtakingly hypocritical.

You just can't make this shit up!

Thanks for clearing that up about sheriff misleading him about his immigration status. I wasn't sure if he was here on an expired visa.

I read a good share of the article and Good God, some of these elected officials must have hella 'brass balls' to pull this kind of shit and expect to not only get away with it, but to be elected for another puplic office on top of it. "HAVE THEY NO SHAME" at all ?

There's got to be something psychologically with that idiot sheriff, and to think this Attorney of his has little enough sense to be working on an ongoing election campaigne for him in spite of all he knows about the case. With any common sense at all the Attorney should be advising him to drop his campaigne immediately to save himself embarassment. Apparently though neither of them have the good sense to even be embarassed. I'm not sure I've heard of a case that tops this height of hypocrisy.

There should however be an investigation into whether or not Babeu misused the powers of his office to help his then boyfriend get the visa to begin with.

This scandal is also another WEINERGATE.

Babeu sent naked pics over the Internet just like Anthony Weiner did.
The only difference is they were naked pics which he sent to another MAN via the gay website adam4adam!
    http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2012-02-16/news/paul-babeu-s-mexican-ex-lover-says-sheriff-s-attorney-threatened-him-with-deportation/%22/

Here's a link to one of the non-x-rated pics he sent:
    http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/02/arizona_sheriff_rocked_by_accusations_of_alleged_immigrant_ex_boyfriend.php?m=1
And a pic of Babeu fondling the ex-boyfriend.

yourname2000 saidI kinda feel sorry for this guy....he's "out". He's admitted to having the relationship with the mexican guy and said all of those allegations are true EXCEPT that he threatened the guy with deportation --he made clear that he doesn't have that authority anyway. So, at this point, that allegation (the threat to deport) seems like a "he said, he said" thing to me.

But I applaud that this guy says he's "out" in his adam4adam profile and was clear at the press conference that "yes, I am a gay man".

I mean really guys, is the political chasm so wide in the states that we'd rather toss one of our own to the wolves just to score a political point? --I would have preferred we make hay with this one to change the Republican party: "see, gays are everywhere, we don't all think the same, we hold positions of authority, and we're not ashamed of the lives we lead."

I just don't get how this incident is in anyway similar to the Senator Craig debacle or the multiple 'rentboy' embarrassments, etc. This guy appears to be the kind of proud stoic gay man that I hope the general population sees --he breaks the stereotype we often get pigeon-holed with. And I'm pretty left-wing, but I'm not going to throw one of our own under the political bus just because I don't agree with his politics. He says he never threatened to get his ex deported...until that allegation is proven false, this guy is EXACTLY the kind of gay man I want the entire world to see.

    ?

Baboner has been lying about his sexuality for his entire lifetime!
He only came out of the closet YESTERDAY.
And only came out because he HAD TO and is attempting damage control.

He tried desperately to get the ex-bf to cover up their relationship and lie about Baboners' sexuality.

How is Baboner in any way truly a proud out gay man when he only came out yesterday AFTER he'd already been revealed as gay?

Well, according to the A4A pic in your link, he's "out". I appreciate that people lie on A4A....I just don't see the motivation to lie about that.

And unlike so many other Repub "outings" this guy didn't lie, obfuscate, slander, etc....from what I saw, he said "all of the allegations are true EXCEPT that I threatened anyone." I like that...and until the allegation that he did threaten is proven true, I'm okay with giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway, I think there was more fodder here to attack the anti-gay policies of the republican party than to attack this guy....an opportunity was missed, imo. This situation seems different to me than the others, but he's been castigated as if it was exactly the same.

    Nope.

    Baboner absolutely did lie.
    And Baboner is STILL lying.
Baboner is claiming that he only had a business relationship with the ex-bf even though there are text messages and pics that prove that they were lovers.

I lived in that part of SE AZ and still own a home there - and I can ASSURE you that regardless of what he posted on his anonymous adam4adam profile - he was most DEFINITELY not even a little bit out.

His public persona was one of 100% macho tough guy heterosexuality.

Which makes this whole thing EXTREMELY repulsive hypocritical and dishonest.

Sorry Rick, I just don't see it in this case...I can't get there. This guy is doing what I would hope any conservative would do if he were outed. He's standing in public, taking open questions from the media....saying publicly that he agrees with gays in the military...not cowering....still planning on running for office.

I appreciate that you take a dimmer view of his actions, but --aside from the yet unproven allegation that he threatened to use his power to silence his ex-- I respect how this guy has handled this. I probably don't agree with his politics, but in a free country, I support his right to have a different opinion. And I also don't see any conflict with him being staunchly anti-illegal immigration/smuggling AND having a Mexican immigrant BF (if anything, I applaud that HE doesn't see any conflict in that.)

If we hope that some of us will infiltrate "the system" so that we can get "inside" to change it, this is how it's going to be done. If he were wearing pink sequined shoes to work, he never would have been elected. Instead, he has his entire force standing behind him in support --these people seem to be defending the man, regardless of his personal life (which he's explained he really wanted to keep personal.)

I just don't have a problem with this guy at all.

    Very naive.

They're standing by this guy because they're Repubs defending a Repub.
If he were a Democrat they would not be anywhere near him.

And everything he said in that press conference was designed to try to distract attention from the rest of the facts of this scandal.
The only thing he admitted to is being gay despite the fact that there's proof to back up other facts that have come out.
    He's still lying.

And this guy who lived in the closet for 43 years and only came out because he was forced out and who engaged in desperate and unethical behavior to try to stay in the closet is NO role model for anyone to emulate.

Imo, naive is expecting these situations to unfold much differently. I stand by my opinion: when the chips were down, he didn't run from who he is. We've got bigger fish to fry in my mind....we should be seeking him as an ally rather than pushing him back to his conservative base.

I won't reply again....no one is changing minds here. icon_biggrin.gif

Baboner had 43 years to come out of the closet.
He had years to publicly state his support for ending DADT and gay rights.
    He never did.
He never did or said ANYTHING to support gay rights.
Now after he gets outed he's suddenly trying to portray himself as some champion of gay rights?
    LOL
    How convenient.

Baboner isn't fighting for gay rights.
He never has in his entire life and he's not now.

He's just a craven selfish politician who's fighting for his political life.

Okay, I said I wasn't gonna reply, but that comment is just wrong...in one of the vids I posted, he's asked if he supports gays in the military and he says "yes, any American who wants to defend his country should be allowed to".

He may be late to the game, but he's on board. And I'll take an out politician who is committed to run again over a closeted one who skulks under a rock (because that's what the Right wants him to do) any day of the week.

I normally agree with you and you posts, Rick...I just see a sliver of hope with this guy (moving forward, of course.) icon_biggrin.gif

The vid you posted is from his press conference from YESTERDAY.
    AFTER he'd been outed.

Never in his career or his 43 years of life has he ever expressed support for gay rights.

You're giving him credit for CHOOSING to support gay rights - when the only reason he expressed support for gay rights yesterday (for the first time ever in his life) was because he was FORCED out of the closet very much against his will.

    That's not worthy of praise.

You're free to disagree of course and I'm not offended at all by the fact that you have a different opinion.
I just think it's wrong to give this guy a gold star for one day of supporting gay rights positions when he's been a public political figure for years and never expressed support for gay rights or did jackshit for gay rights in all that time.

We'll see how committed he is to supporting gay rights in the days to come.
He has a lot of time to make up for!
