Okay guys, so I know this isn't really in the "all things gay" category, but I don't know many Australians personally and there are quite a few on this site, so....general question:

Does anyone have any knowledge about the University of Adelaide, in South Australia? Anything you Aussies know would help me out. I'm considering applying for post-graduate studies there, and I'm trying to get the feel for the school from people who know a little more about it...of course the web-site will boast all its achievements and whatnot, but i would like the "real" info....

Also, how is the city of Adelaide? I've heard it's a great city, and affordable, but again any inside info. would be awesome! for instance, how do they do with homos, haha, and is there a pretty active nightlife?

    Thanks guys!

    Hey Cmon

I live in Adelaide, so I think I can help.

University of Adelaide has a great reputation, and a very lively campus. at the moment, there is a lot of talk going on about injecting a whole heap more money into it to make it one of Australia's best unis. At the moment, Sydney and Melbourne have more attractive unis than Adelaide.

Adelaide is a lovely, leafy town, but small, with only about 1.2m people. Its like a large country town. There is a small gay scene, with only one club and one pub dedicated to the community. Generally, most of the gay community tend to hang out in straight clubs or mixed. There isn't a huge amount of homophobia, but as with anywhere, you need to be careful.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other Qs

Uni of Adelaide is one of the better ones. It's made better by being in Adelaide, often called the biggest small town in the world. It has all the good things about being laid back. Education is being underfunded by the conservative Federal Government, so facitlities for post-grads are shrinking, but the place has great feeling. Everyone makes a point about getting on with everybody else. "Other People" are something to be treasured, from whom you can learn about the rest of the world. Homophobia is strongly condemned on campus, and in the main city as well. Of course there are a few arse-holes about, but not as many as you would think for a city of 1.2 million people.
Facilities are OK, the campus is great, the city is great, and the academic staff are among the best in the world. UofA has one of the highest Nobel Prize winners to size ratios in the world. But no-one is up themselves like many other places. There are many good Unis in Australia, but Adelaide is one of the best.
    (Yes, I'm biased; I'm a postgrad student @ Adel.)

If I was going to study in Australia,I wouldn't go to Adelaide. You need to do some more homework.Look at Sydney or Brisbane, you do want to have some fun while you're here.
