So I was wondering wether you guys believe in fate, or some sort of grand design for all of us?

I'm asking this because something amazing has happened to me today. I have always wanted to join the marines, even when I was younger. Now I'm studying medicine and plan on applying as soon as I graduate.

I went to the gym this morning and saw an older gentleman working out. He was wearing a blue shirt, which said 'Royal Dutch Medical Squad' on the front and 'Fleet Surgeon' on the back. I thought it was just a random shirt, but a voice inside me told me to go ask him. So I did and he turned out to be the head of the medical squad in the royal dutch navy. I told him about myself, that I am studying medicine and that I would very much like to work for the navy as a doctor and get deployed. We had a brief talk and he invited me to shadow him for a day and get a taste of the true navy.

I liked the idea a lot and just sent him an email with my info. I have my rotations right now, but will have some time off soon. He said to definitely stay in touch, as he could help me in my career. I am so happy right now!

I believe that the universe is somehow guiding me. Similar event has transpired, making me believe I am being guided. Wether it be by choices I make subconsciously, or deliberately, every one of them has led me to where I am today and I couldn't be happier.

TL;DR Do you think the universe is guiding you in one way or another?

I think people always associate events with a meaning that appeals to them. The opposite could happen and they don't associate that with something they believe against.

It's like making an opinion and then looking for something to prove yourself right.

I don't have any evidence of a grand design or a lack of one. The things that happen could be a sign of something or they could be not a sign at all. Since I will never know this, I don't spend my time thinking about it. I just accept the boring world for what it is and have more time to do things that will make a difference in my life.

Thinking the universe guides you is a very good reason to not take responsibility for your own decisions. It also alleviates you from holding others accountable for their actions, because the universe was guiding them too.

There's a dying baby in the Congo that begs to differ. The universe is neither logical nor fair.

In order to make sense of complex things, our brains attempt to categorize them, and make assumptions about connections. If you imagine a person from Kansas, you likely picture someone who lives in a rural area, is white and has conservative values.

What you are attempting to do is the same thing, you want a simple description of the universe that makes sense to our limited capacity brain. I don't pretend to understand how the universe works, but that's the point. These are incredible complex things that are well beyond our ability to understand. There is no rhyme or reason for our existence, nor the luck or misfortune that any of us has had in life.

The same ripples of chance and circumstance that lead some to find love and understanding, lead others to misery and death. Most random patterns don't remain random very long. Rhythm and harmony take place with the chaos. Some of it strikes a chord in our minds; while the majority boggle the hell out of the brightest of us.
To find love we must stop looking. To understand the universe we have to stop trying; and in there remains the issues, cause once we stop caring, life loses all substance. And all this logical dribble, just rolls down on to laps in an attempt at reason.

I do believe in a guiding hand.

I also believe that following your heart will open doors for you because you are doing what you are meant to do.

I was interested in getting a smart car. Been thinking about it for awhile. Then, I saw a man with a smart car logo on his shirt at the grocery store. I thought, "Naw, he's just wearing the shirt because he's a fan." But something told me to interrupt the check-out cashier and ask the man if he knew anything about smart cars. Turns out he was a salesman! What dumb luck!

He told me where to go to sign up for a test drive, and the rest is history.

So, yes, of course I believe in fate. After all, without fate my passive pursuits wouldn't have given me the energy to go to the grocery store much less learn to read a random passerby's shirt. I would have never gotten that car! God bless the universe for providing something for me that a mere 50,000 smart car buyers have done without fate's intercession.

Well, honestly, I think you put yourself in the position to meet your benefactor. But for whatever reason, it's good... chase your dreams.

It's the Law of Attraction. I believe in it 100000%. I could rattle off hundreds of examples of how this has worked in my life in the past few years. It's really not as complicated as one would think.

It's really as simple as saying you want something, feeling definitive about it, then not dwelling on it. The universe will inspire us to take action when necessary, and the rest will take care of it for us.

I absolutely believe in this. We make our own opportunities by being open to possibilities and putting ourselves out there. You put yourself out there by approaching the guy in the t-shirt, and it possibly opened up a new door and opportunity for you. One of my favorite sayings that someone told me once --- "Take a Leap of Faith, and a Safety Net Will Appear". Good for you and good luck!

I have to say that I do believe there is some kind of guiding force in the universe at work in my life. Over the past few years in particular I've noticed that things I worry about tend to work themselves out in ways I would have never imagined. There are also things I wanted to work out that didn't work out the way I wanted them to, and them not working out led to something better down the road. I truly do believe life has a purpose and will guide you if you let it. This doesn't mean that you aren't responsible for your own actions but you have to learn to control what you can and accept what you can't.

    gut feelings
    coincidence
    heightened awareness
    or synchronicity of events

    Perhaps a mix of everything.

I was told "there's no such thing as accidents". God is everything. God made it possible for you to meet that gentlemen because there's good for you to do. The Grand Design had to be established somehow.

    Ill buy what he says

I believe everything has vibrations...to some extant know how to use it perfectly is still an art to work with.

The mind does drive your directions in life & without knowing unknowingly what your doing is actually the bracket you call it fate.

my answer is Yes ,grand design of the universe.icon_biggrin.gif

there is no fate or grand design. that was you wanting something, seeing something associated with it and making a inquiry. the OP was just outgoing and should take all the credit, don't cheapen it by calling it fate.

    I think this as well.

I have, though, seen some interesting synchronicity in the world.

The other day my sister was over and I did the usual when expecting an important call; go and stand by the phone five seconds or so before it rings.

She said, "It always makes me feel odd when you do that."

Of course, it could all really just be as simple as this:

Stand in the place where you live
    Now face North
    Think about direction
    Wonder why you haven't before
Now stand in the place where you work
    Now face West
Think about the place where you live
    Wonder why you haven't before

If you are confused check with the sun
Carry a compass to help you along
Your feet are going to be on the ground
Your head is there to move you around

    [repeat 1st verse]

Your feet are going to be on the ground
Your head is there to move you around
If wishes were trees the trees would be falling
    Listen to reason
    Season is calling

    [repeat 1st verse]

If wishes were trees the trees would be falling
    Listen to reason
    Reason is calling
Your feet are going to be on the ground
Your head is there to move you around

    So Stand (stand)
    Now face North
Think about direction, wonder why you haven't before
    Now stand (stand)
    Now face West
Think about the place where you live
    Wonder why you haven't

    [repeat 1st verse]

Stand in the place where you are (Now face North)
Stand in the place where you are (Now face West)
Your feet are going to be on the ground (Stand in the place where you are)
Your head is there to move you around, so stand.

I don't believe in luck, nor do I believe in misfortune. I truly believe that everything, even me typing this message right now, has been set in motion by events I have been through and choices I have made in life. I take responsibility for every choice I make. I hold no one accountable for the choices they make that somehow (would) affect me. Because wether they affect me or not, is my decision. I am my own person.

I believe I am meant to do this, meant to practice medicine. From a very young age this has been by true desire. I am chasing that desire and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I know what I want and where I am heading. I'm just trying to figure out how to get there.

The events transpiring being a reflection of your own will does truly resonate with me. I believe that when you want something, truly desire it, you get sensitized to your dream. You somehow 'sense' (subconsciously) when to act and what to do at what time.
