Good news. The State of Maryland legislature has passed the Gay Marriage Bill. The Governor Martin O'Malley is expected to sign this.

    Yeah,

But apparently it's still going to a referendum this year. I am pessimistic and don't think Marylanders will be empathetic. I hope they prove me wrong, otherwise it's another lengthy court battle.

No court battle. This would go like Maine, if the measure fails... and if it goes to referendum in the first place. Though that is likely.

It would we nice if America could reach a point where we're no longer voting, or deciding whether we should vote, on who gets to have rights or not. icon_rolleyes.gif

It's going to a referendum because the Maryland REPUBLICANS have vowed to get enough signatures to bring it to a referendum.

Our equal rights are going to be put to a vote again - and as of now it looks like the Repubs will succeed in getting the votes to kill marriage equality for gays in Maryland.

Just like we saw in New Jersey - the Democrsts are fighting to make gay marriage legal - and the Repubs are fighting to keep gay Americans second class citizens.

Such a contrast between each side of the Potomac - in MD a pro-civil rights governor Martin O'Malley. In VA a governor who has made several bigoted comments directed at homosexuals and who has repeatedly pushed hard for anti-gay legislation. At least I live in close proximity to decency. icon_confused.gif

It is highly likely that the African American vote will kill gay marriage. All they need is roughly 55,000 signatures total to bring it to a vote. 30% of the state is African American and a sizable majority are against the measure.

If gay marriage is killed in MD it will be because the anti-gay Repub activist politicians force a referendum on it - and because Repub voters turn out to vote against equal rights for gay Americans.

    PERIOD.

Wrong. A distinct majority of blacks are DEMOCRATIC voters. A majority of them are SIMULTANEOUSLY AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE EQUALITY . Your delusions notwithstanding.

This is not about "republican vs democrat", or "white vs black", this is "pro-gay vs anti-gay".

Evidence, unfortunately, shows that black democratic voters could be instrumental in stopping gay marriage from passing.

AND A DISTINCT MAJORITY OF REPUBS ARE ANTI-GAY.

The fact is that the ones who are collecting the signatures necessary to impose a referendum that puts our equal rights to a vote ARE THE MARYLAND REPUBLICANS.

Black voters aren't involved in any activist campaign to try to kill marriage equality in MD.
    THE MD REPUBS ARE.

Your attempt to try to blame the destruction of marriage equality in MD on blacks is just a desperate attempt to try to deflect blame from rightly being assigned to the activist Repubs in MD who are working to try to kill the new law allowing gay marriage.

    It also reeks of racism.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Oh really? So if someone points out that a majority of republicans happens to be white and a majority of them happens to be anti-gay that's NOT racist but pointing out the fact that the majority of democratic black voters are ALSO anti-gay is all of a sudden racist? Haha, nice try!! I suppose also pointing out, in a relevant context, that gay males in the USA have the highest rates of HIV would be "self-hating" and "homophobic", right? It would never serve as a recognition of reality in order to find solutions, right?

Just because you aren't willing to address the actual hurdles that need to be overcome for gay marriage to be passed doesn't mean some of us aren't concerned. You waltz in here trying to make this about political parties.

rickrick, if you didn't notice -- you're a spectacle and the laughingstock of this forum.
