Morning Mix: Santorum Warns College Makes You Liberal. (from care2causes)

If Santorum does win in Michigan would it be because conservatives there believe President Obama’s push for more education is intended to produce more liberals? This point never fails to fascinate me–conservatives seem to cede the point that a lack of education and conservative voting go hand in hand when they make this argument. Why would they do that?Warns College Makes You LiberalMichigan Tea Partiers Share Rick Santorum’s Fears Over Obama’s College Push23876583

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From TPM ....TROY, MICHIGAN — Rick Santorum’s contention here Saturday that President Obama’s plan to make college more accesible is really a scheme to brainwash people into becoming liberals may have struck some outside observers as a little odd.

But for the tea party crowd gathered here as part of an Americans For Prosperity rally, Santorum’s words about higher education were right on point.

“President Obama wants everybody in America to go to college,” Santorum said. “What a snob!”

Santorum started by saying some people don’t need to go to college: “Not all folks are gifted the same way. Some people have incredible gifts with their hands.” He then suggested there was an sinister motive behind Obama’s push to get more Americans in college classrooms.

“There are good, decent men and women who work hard every day and put their skills to the test that aren’t taught by some liberal college professor… That’s why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image,” Santorum said. “I want to create jobs so people can remake their children into their image, not his.”

Red meat, yes. But still not something you hear a lot on the campaign (though Santorum’s used the line before). So I set out into the crowded ballroom to find out just what the people the AFP crowd thought of Santorum’s attack line.

Turns out they quite liked it.

“I thought that was brilliant,” said Angie Clement of Commerce, Mich. “Not everybody has to go to college. We need garbagemen, we need welders, carpenters.”

“Everybody can’t be equal,” agreed Paul Murrow of Milford, MI seated nearby. “Somebody needs to do the manual labor.”

Clement’s husband, Stephen, said Santorum was right on the mark when he said that Obama wants to send kids to get college degrees so as to produce more liberals.

“It starts down at the elementary school level with all this bullshit about diversity, pardon my French,” he said. “Diversity and sensitivity and all that crap. That’s the stuff that needs to be taught at home not by my teachers. My teachers need to be academic: Math, science, history, social studies, that sort of thing and keep political opinions out of it, bottom line.”

Like most of the crowd in Troy, Stephen and Angie are middle-aged. Stephen said his two step kids are grown and one, his stepson, went to the University of Michigan and got an engineering degree, “but now he’s not using it. And that’s his choice.”

“I think he’s saying, ‘Do you think that that’s the only way you can be a successful person? To go to college?’” said another attendee, Elizabeth, who didn’t want her last name used. “That is snobbery. In this entrepreneurial country that we have, where fortunes are made in a lot of ways — they’re not only made by college-educated people.”

They all agreed that college can help some people — but they also agreed that universities are basically socialism factories.

“They try and disguise it with, you know, ‘equal opportunity’…” Stephen Clement began.

“It’s communism,” Murrow said, cutting him off. “The professors are all teaching the kids…”

“Where does the social engineering stop?” Clement jumped back in, fired up. “Does it stop after we send everybody to college, or does it stop after we set their curriculum and said, ‘these are the things you’re allowed to study?’ Does it become the Soviet Union?”

tjirish34 Good point. Especially for the Independent voter, who really hates the personal attacks. Many of us do, but there is a reason why they are Independents, and that's one of them. People like this President, even those who disagree with his politics. It makes Santorum look small and peevish. We already know Hamhead is large and peevish. Oops. I just called an unlikable guy a bad name.

The fact that these people can attack education as too liberal in one breath and complain that liberals think they're ignorant in the next is a tribute to their utter lack of any sense of (a) irony and (b) cause-and-effect.

If they really want to keep or build their ranks, they need to stop educating people altogether. Burn the books, close the schools, pass laws to make it illegal to learn to read. That's how it's done, Republican Party.

Given this, I think a brokered convention that nominates Joe the Plumber is a distinct possibility. Wish him well. Think of it. How much better the world would be with a Congress filled with illiterates (not that it isn't on the R side now).

    Fenestrate

Makes a sick kind of sense. If we're going to compete with China. one way is to have a bunch of poor, dumb slobs who will work for peanuts. That this man would choose that avenue rather than, say, improving the education of our workers so they could compete in the more skilled professions, is abhorrent.

Doomed, I say, Doomed. We have an entire segment of the society that has been brainwashed to think that stupid is cool. On the whole I don't want a garbage collector running the nation, and to espouse a line of thought that we should create more uneducated people is crazy. But then this is the year of 'Crazy'.

If this is not the prime reason not to vote republican then I don't know what else will convince you.

Wow.....For people to still be debating whether there is an education premium given all the data available is pretty incredible. This is 10 year old data but according to the 2000 US Census Bureau (under a GOP President) a HS grad earned $23,233 while a Bachelor's degree earned $45,648. Yes we need ditch-diggers and pot-scrubbers but to argue that our national educational policy should be tailored to create them is to absolutely defy the principles of Human Capital and Comparative Advantage. Santorum is no idiot (he is making a strategic decision to get the nomination) but his followers are neanderthals.

By all means, these people should make sure their kids get no book larnin'. Get my lawn mowed much less expensively with more competition for the privilege.

Race to the bottom indeed. Poor li'l Ricky ‒ he once saw the expression "Liberal Arts College" and thought it meant that's where people go to learn to be liberals. Ricky may be educated, but education can't cure stupidity. Knowledge is not the same thing as wisdom and education is not the same thing as intelligence. The idea that stupid people want their children to be stupid too is a step backwards from the "American dream". On the other hand, the TeePee'ers seem to think that this is the solution to the immigration problem. What America needs is people who will compete with the illegal immigrants for the

I saw this in the news yesterday. So now the new Republican line is that education is a bad thing. The evils of knowledge!

Can't wait to see what they will come up with next. And to think- you can actually sell the the tea partiers on this crap!

While I agree that you don't need to push for college education. There are jobs that pay well if you get the technical training and apprenticeship under your belt. However, to suggest that President Obama's push for college education is an insidious ploy is laughable.

Its as if Santorum and his ilk along with Gingrich are doing their damndest to seek the lowest common denominator for votes rather than elevating their party for votes. as the old song says "THIS IS THE CRAZIEST PARTY I'VE EVER SEEN"

A look back in history and which organization was credited with keeping the masses ignorant? The span of around a thousand years called in History 'the dark ages', brought to you by THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, the book burners and torureres of that time directed against any person or groups who sought knowlegde outside the 'prescribed' non scinetific beliefs and doctrines of their church. THE CHURCH kept the masses ignorant to enrich their organization, came up with selling indulgences for the purchase of a cooler place in hell. SANTORUM STILL BELIEVES IN THIS HOCUS POCUS, so he's all about keeping people ignorant and steeped in RELIGIOUS SUPERSTITIONS. Conservatism at its most fanatic level brought to you by Santurum.

Not so far back it was the southern Conservative Plantation class that wanted to keep people ignorant to keep the status quo of Slavery in place.

Promoting ignorance has always for some reason come from those against change for the better, Sadly from the fanatical Conservative side. Not all conservatives are like that by any stretch, but still it is the source of the problem, you never see Liberals promoting ignorance do we.

"Becomes a bigger fool by the minute" You got that right !!!

Santorum probably read something about 'liberal arts' while on some college campus speaking engagement and thinks its Obama's Idea to make more 'liberals'. He latched onto that 'brain fart' like 'stink on shit'. LOL !!!
