Tattoo placement?

Since I'm not quite sure where this question should go, I'll make this into a general thread about tattoo placement and where you think looks best.

I currently only have 1, which is located on my right wrist and I'm looking at getting my second tattoo next month around my birthday. The art is going to be a similar shape and style to my other one - rectangular and minimalist. For placement I'm leaning towards the back of my arm, sort of in the tricep area. My concern with this is that over time as the muscles grow and shrink that it will distort and stretch. A friend of mine has one in a similar place that's fallen victim to this and it's now blown out. I'm also considering the back of my right calf which I'm thinking should remain pretty consistent over the years, not sure if that area fits my style though.

Any thoughts? Where do y'all think tattoos look good?

I don't think the triceps are a good spot for a smallish piece. Have you considered your back, between the shoulder blades? I guess it really depends on the design/size.

I can't seem to find a good example of what I'm envisioning. I haven't considered the back as this wouldn't work well in that space and don't think a back tattoo is for me. I'm pretty particular I guess. Probably why it's taken me 4 years to decide what I want next.

    For me ...
Tattoos look best when they highlight an area that is sexy already or hot
If you have big arms .... a tricep tat would be great
Big Broad shoulders? ... an upper back tatoo would look good

Think of it as a body asterisk

I have one on my calf, left bicep, right upper arm and right shoulder blade. The choice is ultimately yours but think ahead. The one on my right shoulder blade was cute when I was 18 but now at 45... lets just say I'm exploring a coverup tat for that one.

I've only got one tattoo and it's on my chest. For me, it was important that I could see the tattoo because I got it to remind me of certain things in my life that are important. Getting a tattoo on your triceps, back or legs never made sense to me. You'd never see it so why bother?

Getting a tattoo is a wholly personal choice. Take each person's advice with a grain of salt, because ultimately the size, style, placement, etc. will all speak to the meaning you want in your tattoo. Think about what you want the tattoo to say to you. What does it represent? Then from there think how you can best portray this message. Tattoos are permanent (well not really anymore), so you should consider how your attitude will change, how your body will change, and how your future will be affected by this tattoo (job, relationship, etc.). I hope it turns out well!

I got my first tattoo about a year after I moved from my hometown/state. It's an outline of Arizona with a heart over the metro area with a couple of words from a friends band. I went to 4 tattoo shops before I found one that would tattoo it facing me. They were all "but don't you see, nobody will be able to read what it says!" I said that it's a tattoo for me not for other people and the important thing is that I can read it. I get that people have tattoos for all sorts of reasons and it's great they want to inform you that others should appreciate it, but if someone wants something and aren't totally blitzed and incapable of making a decision, just do it. yeesh.

As for other parts of the body that aren't visible, yeah, I think it depends on the reasoning/symbolism behind the piece. I don't really understand getting a tattoo just for the sake of getting one though I've seen some really cool art pieces, but then I also have a lot of friends with some awful AWFUL pieces they got when they were 18.

What I'm planning to get is the last drawing from the book, 'the Little Prince'. It has enough meaning to me to want to get it, yet unlike the AZ tattoo I don't feel that I need to have it in a place I can see it every day - if that makes sense.
