How would you define masculinity? What, in your opinion, makes a man a man? This is an open topic and I am just interested in how different people view masculinity.....

Is dominant masculine? Is violence masculine? Does a man need to play sport to be a man? Assertiveness, confidence, humour, strength, youthfulness or is a gentleman the ultimate image of masculinity?

    Discuss.

Well the official definition of masculinity says that it's defined by strength or aggressiveness.

I often see stature associated with this. If you happen to see someone of smaller/less muscular stature they automatically assume they're feminine.

I think the whole masc vs. fem thing in the gay scene is ridiculous. People are people no matter what and something as small as sexual orientation shouldn't define you.

The last thread with the same title was created before I joined the site.. so technically it was "before my time". Plus, two years is a long time and people's view could have changed. I have also noted that you were one of the first few respondents in each of those post regarding this subject. So for godsake, stay on topic or hold you peace.

yourname2000 saidProbably a 100,000 of these exact same threads ago (so maybe 3 months), another poster said something I liked: "quit pretending you don't know what masculinity is!"

I just want your definition, cos apparently everyone's version is different.

Not having a bodily organ that randomly shoots people with blood every month (if that description fits your penis, you should probably get that looked at by a medical professional)

Quiet dignity and brave stoicism in the face of a random and often cruel world.

What I've come to understand: Masculinity, a socially constructed concept based loosely on biology that prescribes what characteristics a man should have. Although there doesn't seem to be any good argument as to why a man should have these characteristics as opposed to feminine characteristics, which is also socially constructed.

There are useful and adaptive aspects to both: nurturing, dominance, receptiveness to subtle social cues, aggression (in so far as it means assertiveness)
