Sleep

I've been having a sleeping problem for a few months.
I can never sleep for more than 5-6 hours a night (if that). I even went so far as to take sleeping pills to induce sleep at various times in order to rest myself.

I haven't seen any negative consequences really except for bags under my eyes (no change in mood, health, productivity, sex drive). Usually not even energy level, except mid day when I'm exhausted at times, but even then I can't seem to fall asleep until around 4am and wake up at 7-8.

This even applies to nights out drinking, I can go to sleep at 5 and wake up at 8 and not be able to nap through the day. I also do not drink caffeine.

I'm concerned because I'm beginning to feel sore for a longer period of time after the gym, and not just typical leg day sore. This leads me to believe the lack of sleep is interfering with my body's ability to heal and build muscle. - stunting muscle growth.

I know college students are obviously sleep deprived, but this is strange and I'd really like to know if anyone has gone through anything like this or has any advice.

    Thanks

There are a lot of things that people should do to have healthy and regular sleep.

The first thing a sleep doc would tell you is "no caffeine before bed" as well as telling you that alcohol is bad for your sleep as well. And then to sleep and wake up at the same times every day (including weekends), though that's not possible for some.

    The common tips:
    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sleep/HQ01387
Aside from the tips for a good bedtime routine, it could be a problem with your thoughts running wild. If that's the case, you could try to get those emotions out before bed, maybe write your thoughts down to feel more calm. Play calming music as you're winding down. Make the room darker in the hours before bed, give your body every indication that it is going to be time to sleep soon.

One thing that I strongly suggest is that if you're laying in bed for 45 mins with no feeling that sleep is coming soon, get up and do something for 15 minutes. Anything to get your mind in a different mode (reading, writing emails, watch a bit of tv) then go back to bed. You'll have a much better chance at sleeping on the second try than if you just laid in bed the whole time.

Naps are bad. Try to not take naps in the day, and if you must, keep it under 30mins. Otherwise it'll fuck up your sleep schedule.

Getting bright light in the morning may help make you feel energetic for the day and get you to be sleepier earlier at night (it sounds like wacky science but blue light from the sun affects the body's circadian rhythm). It helps some people.

Sleeping pills suck, mainly because they make you sleepy for like 9-10 hours. I don't take them anymore. Prescription sleeping pills are also not great because they can be addictive and prevent you from sleeping without them. You could try Melatonin, which is the stuff your brain releases anyway to make you feel sleepy. It's in the drug store in the supplement section. I find it makes me wake up sooner, but some take it to fall asleep faster.

I've had insomnia for years now, and I've never been able to solve it. It's a medical problem, and you should consult a doctor, if you can, rather than trying to treat it yourself. There are many possible causes and treatments. There's no quick fix. You will probably have to try different treatments until you find something that works. Let me know if you want to know more.

Wow.....I didn't know naps were bad for you...I always thought that if I didn't get enough sleep the night before I could make up for it with a nap...icon_confused.gif I guess not.....and I love long naps...I was JUST about to take a two hour nap icon_cry.gif

Some people can function optimally on 5-6 hours of sleep. It could fit fine into your circadian rhythm. I'm pretty sure those people would use coffee, though.

I disagree about naps. A 10 min nap in the day can have more impact than an extra hour at night.

So you have trouble falling asleep AND can't sleep in past a certain time in the morning? Or is 7/8 just when you have to get up, even though you haven't had much sleep?

Are you in a dark and quiet environment for the couple hours before you want to sleep? Looking at a computer screen can be bright enough to interfere. Are you exposed to bright light throughout the day?

Yeah. I have to leave my apartment everyday by 830.
I'm exposed to a decent amount of light throughout the day
I'm just getting worried because I've been feeling drained lately and am beginning to get sick and I feel its logical to think has to do with my recent lack of quality sleep.

Do you eat late in the evening or within 2 hours or so of bedtime? That can have an impact as well.

Another thought could be stress, but it seems like that would be showing up in other areas of your life.

We can't really diagnose you. Only a doctor can do that. We might be able to provide amateur opinions if you provide more information. What exactly is happening? Are you having trouble getting to sleep? Are you waking up during the night? Are you waking up too early and can't get back to sleep?

Brush your teeth before the nap and you won't have that problem when you wake up from the nap!
    From personal experience, many times.

As far as the effects on your workouts: sleep is essential because growth hormone peeks during sleep cycles and if you don't get enough your body can not repair itself adequately.

Interesting article worth looking up on BBCnews about sleep habits having changed to one sleep period when two periods of about four hours with a break of an hour or two seems to have been common back when.

The Mayo Clinic stuff is good. It can help to analyze what is going on.

    Sweet dreams.
