    shouldn't be because

    a) you don't have a wife to support

    b) you don't have children to support

    [for the most part]

which equates to more disposable income.

I don't think so... looking at what my straight friends spend, or don't, I come about average by comparison.

That's fucking cheap. I drink "Irish Russians" (Stoli Vanil, Kahlua, Irish Cream) in giant beer mugs made of 1000's of karats of pure diamond.

Well ok, I do drink Irish Russians. icon_wink.gif

Comparing to a single straight guy my age, I spend more on personal care products, but they probably spend just as much on clothes. Meanwhile, I don't have a car or any expensive electronics.

The only thing ultra expensive in my life is bodybuilding and the costs realted to gym, trainer, supplements and good food (I cook a lot of checken breasts and steak). The biggest expense otherwise is the insane amount of money I get taxed on a six figure income with no "little tax shelters" (to quote Vince Vaughn in "Four Christmases"). But I am also in that small group of gays who did not develop party habits (bars every weekend, lots of alcohol and cigarettes, etc.). I do spend a lot of condoms, too.

I don't agree. It's as expensive as you make your lifestyle. Plus, at least for me, the simple life is a better life.

BS ! If your a high maintenance gay who has to have the latest designer trends/ hair cut at top salons and pricey gym memberships etc then yeah sure.

I know plenty of low maintenance gay men who don't give a flying fuck about materialism/keeping up with the gay Jonses.

It's all dependent upon your value system and what kind of environment you've been raised in/exposed to.

Most people want expensive things not because they actually want them but because some clever advertiser has created that want. People buy into it because they sell you an aspirational lifestyle and create insecurities/wants that you didn't previously have.

feh, I could be straight and still have my addiction to modifying cars. Almost all of my "extra" income goes straight into the parts purse here. Next on the list is a full suspension suite costing $1200 followed by cooling upgrades worth $500, chassis bracing around $600 and then various different "power mods" for the engine, up to and including a $3k turbo-intercooler setup.

Most of my clothes, "fabulous" as they may be, come from TJMaxx or rummage sales anyway. I have a pair of $200 jeans that i paid $30 for, heheh.

Like some one already said, it all depend on your lifestyle. For me, I would say it is absolutely not true. Once in a while, I wear pas me down; I take bus; I do not eat out, this are all the things that makes some people feel so stereotypically gay, while in reality, it is not true.

Just because it's theoretically cheaper to be a single gay male; doesn't negate the fact that there are those financially irresponsible gay boys and men, who will buy more seeing the can "afford" it. For anyone who spends on fancy underwear, nice pants, bi-monthly haircuts, the latest in entertainment, and weekends at the bars or with outings with friends; and let us not forget rent, owning a car, food, and utilities; it can be get pretty damn expensive looking the part of a proper well off gay guy.

Personally, I choose to live below my means. I calculate what I can afford according to the job(s) I have. Then I subtract about $100 to $200 in allowable income so I can perceive myself to be making less. I plan to spend less, buy less, and use less. It seems a little ridiculous and somewhat impossible, but once you've lived by Minimal means alone, you learn what you really NEED versus your Strong Desire to WANT. I'm not perfect, and I do have an allowance once a month on single things I'll allow myself to splurge on across the board; if the Want should prove overwhelming. But for the most part I'm a content Minimalist with enough combined belongings to store in one room.
