So guys, I need some help-

My boyfriend has an almost brand new iPhone and last night, after having a few drinks, I was looking for something around the hot tub using the phone as a flashlight, and i fell in the hot tub and brought the phone with me. It was submerged maybe 3 seconds but that was enough-

There is no noticeable water damage, and everything such as e-mail, wifi, the apps work, but the phone/camera do not work. Is there any way it is salvageable or do I just need to go buy him a new one?

I feel suuuuuuuuuper shitty about it, and want to fix the problem ASAP. Thanks!

It's new right? Take it to the store and say the camera and the phone stopped working, they should replace it. I mean, stuff is faulty all the time, so why not try?

Not if they see the water damage indicator

Try putting the phone into a dessicant (drying agent) for a day or 2. A common household item is uncooked dry rice. Fill a jar with the iPhone inside, and seal the lid.

If the phone is very new it may be under warrant or have an extended warranty. Don't tell the Apple store or the carrier that it was submerged. The fact that some functions still work could make it seem a component failure. But still dry it first, because their finding moisture inside it would not support your story that it failed spontaneously.

I'm not sure how sensitive any internal water damage indicator would be - tell them he jogs with it and sweats a lot! LOL! Actually I did have my iPhone 4 fail completely after I did an AIDS walk with it in my pocket, though protected in a Zip-Loc bag, which may actually have made matters worse. But it recovered 24 hours later (I didn't use rice but set it out in the Florida sun), and my partner is still using it.

There is a water damage indicator? I thought there was no noticeable water damage...

There is no noticeable water damage but I did know there was an indicator. I took one of those dusting cans (used for getting dust off of keyboards and everything) and sprayed it into both the headphone jack and the chrging port. My friend said the same thing as chainers because when she dropped her iphone in the toilet she brought it in and said it was being faulty and they gave her a new one on the spot. Worth trying I guess. Thanks icon_smile.gif

Yea well hopefully the store is full of idiots then. Either way, it's cheaper to repairs a phone than it is to buy a new one (it's like 600 without a contract) so take in!

If they have a bunch of idiots there then you may get by with a new phone, but if they check those indicators and see that they have been wet then you are SOL. Good luck

Then maybe the Otter Box covers I got for both our iPhones were a good investment. The model I chose has pretty snug rubber flaps over both the jack and the port, maybe good enough for a quick immersion or a little rain, followed by a quick drying off outside the case. icon_question.gif

Yeah it had the otter box case on it (one of the best cases if i must say so myself) so I'm hoping that that helps the cause. I really hope they just give him a new one. I feel so bad. icon_sad.gif

Get a flashlight, look in the headphone port, if you see pink, water indicator is wet. Look in the charging port (this one is tricky) its in the middle kinda hard to see, same thing though, if you see pink, its been wet. If either one of those are wet and they see it, they dont have to replace shit unless you're gonna pay for it of course. But then again they might have some idiots working there. Only one way to find out.

I would advise that your boyfriend get a new one immediately.

Not an iPhone, but boyfriend that is.

This model is obviously faulty as it demonstrates terrible judgement, is a clumsy drunk and didn't have basic awareness that moisture indicators are present in electronics.

My advice is to upgrade at once.

I'd suggest something in blond, perhaps with large pectorals.

I actually knew that there were moisture indicators, I just was unaware that you could look into the phone to see them as I thought the phone had to be opened up to see them.

Your post is ridiculous and unhelpful. Next time, posting nothing would be a better decision.

Its not that I dont believe you Clay, but I have this really strong urge/temptation to drop my iPhone in hot water, let is soak until it stops working, and check the water indicators. But I have this feeling even if you are wrong, I would still lose...

This may sound crazy and I apologize if it has been mentioned already as I didnt read all the posts, but, soak the phone in a bowl of uncooked rice. Make sure the phone is totally covered. The rice will absorb any moisture which still may be in the phone.

I have heard of this working before. goodluck.

Does the credit card with which you purchased the phone have any kind of "purchase protection insurance"? Or, does the phone have any kind of loss/damage insurance?

I assume your bf knows you accidentally got the phone wet... Since he's on this site right? He's a nice guy so I'm sure he understands accidents happen. I say take it to the apple store and see if you get a) a nice genius or b) a stupid one. At the very least you might get a new one at the subsidized price, not full.
