The journal Nature is devoting this month's issue to Alan Turing for the centennial anniversary of his birth.

It's all free and good to read. icon_biggrin.gif

A fascinating man and a fascinating tale of a life worthy of rememberance and celebration. Might I be typing this in this way without his contributions?

Google I believe acknowledged his birthday or something with one of those front-page modified graphics before, hopefully in June they will be kind enough to do the same.

An undisputed hero and genius undisputedly treated like crap by his country for all the wrong reasons. Alan Turing's story is full of inspiration, wisdom, luck, and brilliance - and then of betrayal in the name of idiocy.

    What a man!

Indeed. In my undergrad artificial intelligence course I learned about the Turing test; in Theory of Computation the topics included Turing machines, Turing equivalence, and Turing completeness. Only later did I learn that Turing was prosecuted in the UK for "gross indecency", i.e., homosexuality. Upon conviction he underwent chemical castration -- injections of estrogen -- in lieu of a prison sentence. Turing committed suicide two years later.
