I've mentioned before that I visited that school district many times, wearing my hat as a University Assistant Registrar. My job was to recruit high school and junior college students for our university.
But I also knew about their extreme homophobic policies. And while otherwise out personally, my job was to represent my university, and not let my personal life or politics become an issue. So I kept my mouth shut, even when I saw an obviously gay student. What they didn't know was that every night I was going to gay clubs in nearby Minneapolis.
And frankly, I felt if I could get these kids out of this hateful environment, by any means, to a healthier, more gay-friendly one on my campus, I had performed the greater service. Tactics, always tactics, with the end result always more important than my own short-term emotions. I felt I wasn't merely recruiting these kids into our college, but rescuing them.
