I'll be traveling to Florida for a conference in late July 2012. After the conference I thought about vacationing for a few days to a week in Key West. Would anybody have any suggestions on gay friendly accommodations in Key West? and things to do? I'll be traveling alone.

    thanks.....Mark

Is this an ironic question? I know Key West is in FL, not the friendliest of states, but it's KEY Freakin West.
JP is correct Ruby's is a great place. Just look up 'Purple Vacations'? (guys help me out) they have a ton of resources for LGBT places to stay

When I was at Big Ruby's (great place btw) it wasn't all male, but that may have changed.

Hothouse saidWhen I was at Big Ruby's (great place btw) it wasn't all male, but that may have changed.

I was there a few months ago and they still permit women, though few stay there. And it remains clothing optional for all, sort of like a nude beach is. Be prepared to strip in front of women, and see them naked, too, if any are in residence.

It is indeed very nice, perhaps with the most attractive grounds of all the gay guest houses in KW. JPtheBITCH mentions the "house" but in fact, like many KW places, it's comprised of several separate buildings, converted from older houses. But that only adds to the residential sense, each room different from any other, not like the universal sameness of modern chain hotels.

A strictly male clothing optional hotel, right on Duval Street, is New Orleans House. Not as refined as Big Ruby's, more in the Key West "ramshackle" tradition, it features a poolside garden bar that's popular with local gays.

So that a single guy is more likely to meet other single guys there, whereas Ruby's is for guests only, many of them couples. I love when I find myself at the bar drinking next to a totally naked guy who just got out of the pool. Or just sipping my drink and watching guys play naked water volleyball.

It's also connected to the Bourbon Street Pub, which is totally public, and can be cruisy at night when they have male strippers performing. Best rooms in my opinion are on the Grand Balcony where you can watch the Duval Street scene, and some have rear doors to the gym and nude sundeck in back.

I also like Cypress House for a mixed crowd, gay owned but guests include straights & females, not clothing optional. But great complimentary hot breakfasts and a generous happy hour. OP e-mail me for more info & details, and we know many of the owners and hotel managers to refer by name, and likewise good restaurants and other things to do. I can send personal pics of some of these places, as well as links.

southbeach1500 saidI haven't yet run into a "gay-unfriendly" accomodation anywhere in the USA, UK, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Canada or Panama.

Lord Jesus give me strength. Dude, I don't believe for a minute that you have never run into a gay unfriendly area/accommodations in the countries you listed. If that were true, you have led a sheltered life or have been very lucky. If you want to taste a gay unfriendly area/accommodations, I will take you to some places. All you will have to do is fall out the car and there you will be. So I'm gonna pull my troll flag.

LMAO! I agree with you: what meaningless, empty advice about Key West. Well, fortunately for the OP, his question was in fact limited to Key West, not half the globe. And it is indeed true of Key West, to my own considerable experience there, and those of our gay friends, that it would be hard to find a place that wasn't gay friendly.

But that being a given, the real question is what places would best suit & please the OP, and who will provide him with actual leads? I've already given some thoughts, as have others, and will email him with more if he wishes. Anyone else with real names & contacts for places they recommend should post them.

Honestly, this is one of the times I wish the RJ format allowed us to create up-dateable archives for this kind of info, so guys could just look up "Key West Gay Attractions" or for any other place or interest topic. I'd like to see this kind of resource database established here, instead of having to reinvent the wheel in threads every time these questions are asked repeatedly.

So are you moved in yet? I won't say online where you are. But please give me your street address, with your permission we'll stop in our next trip down there, if you're at home. Then we'll all continue south for a complete debauch in the Conch Republic. icon_wink.gif

It also occurs to me we may be going to KW ourselves about that time. You don't say where your conference is.

Please keep me updated in e-mail. We might be able to facilitate some of your travel. If a business is paying, then lodging & rental cars will be on them, naturally. But if you have some gaps in your personal travel to KW let me know, we might be able to help out.

And if nothing else we could meet in KW, along with another RJer we know in KW, if his schedule permits. As well as meet in the Ft Laud/Miami area if that's where your conference is.

We'll walk you through this as much as you need. Do keep in direct touch.

E-mail me. Give me more details of what you both want. Late April is good, that's the beginning of the lower hotel rates season. I'll give you places, links, and personal names to contact.

Absolutely true. There is no place a gay person would be unwelcome in Key West. You may get some dirty looks from tourists, especially the ones who flood off the big cruise ships that now can dock there. But I can't think of any merchants or locals who would be hostile.

Stayed at Alexander's Guesthouse a couple of years ago. Was recently redone... beautiful, with helpful staff, and great character. Mixed guests, with mainly gay and lesbian couples, but singles too, and generally a great bunch.

You can slum it across the street at Island House with a day pass that costs about as much as an entry fee for a bathhouse.

There are a couple of blocks on Fleming Street filled with gay guest houses.
Many gay owned or gay friendly restaurants, etc.
    Try www.gaykeywestfl.org

Email me when you get closer to visiting and I'll see if I am in town. I know I have vacations at the end of July- beginning of August, but I've lived here 25 years and can make recommendations .

    Love meeting RJers , too

    bob in KW

Did you know this year's King of Fantasy Fest is the Innkeeper of Cypress House? Dave Taylor, nice guy. We've done Fantasy Fest, lots of silly fun, though event pricing at the hotels is in effect when some rates go up as much as double.

This trip will be our 4th year staying there. Not planning on staying anywhere else, either.

Once you meet the staff and guests (many of whom have been going there for 10 or more years!) you'll see why.
