Ugh. I love Survivor and I can't stand Colton. You can't even make the case that he's edited in a way that makes him look bad--his eye rolling, whining, and sense of entitlement can't be dismissed.
Unfortunately, nobody watches the usual villans of realty television and say, "well, that's how typical white men and women react," but when the participants fit into certain archetypes that they might have been casted for, then it's easy for people who are prejudiced to reach a conclusion that those traits must apply to everyone of that race/gender/orientation/whatever.
One of my favorite players in Survivor was Todd, the winner of China. He was one of the best strategic players in the history of the game and he also happened to be gay and not all that masculine. There have been a lot of other gay players who were judged for their game play and not their sexual orientation. Unfortunately, Colton probably won't be one of them.
Tonight's episode was just over the top. I thought, "who does this guy think he is?" My first boyfriend had an extremely privileged upbringing, was just as effeminate as Colton, and could be just as condescending, but unlike Colton, he was smart enough to turn it off and keep it to himself when he needed to. If you put him in Colton's place, everyone would have liked him, but he would have manipulated the entire game and his solo interviews where he got to say what was really on his mind would have been the funniest in years.
