Because you're muscular/athletic/attractive, do people every assume you're dumb?

    I was on an East Coast beach in my little speedo when a guy next to me started chatting me up. It was clear early into the conversation he thought I was attractive, but obviously stupid. He was visibly shocked when he asked what I did because I told him I was in grad school studying cell and molecular biology at Penn (not Penn State), which was true. After that, in a very polite way I let him know he could stuff himself.

    Has it ever been obvious that someone assumes you're dumb because you're muscular or athletic or attractive?

    People always make assumptions
    I have had quite a few guys tell me that they'd always assumed I was a party boy before they got to know me
    ...and nothing could be further from the truth
    you can't stop them from making those assumptions but you can counter them only when they get to know you

    Worse! When they find out you are brainy and brawny, they get intimidated and then shun you! Urgh!icon_confused.gif

    I did a "Dumb Jock" thread back several months ago on this topic. It is amazing the people that think it you place importance on physical development, somehow you don't have it elsewhere... doesn't make much sense.

    People make silly assumptions; and I'm sure I've done it too and probably don’t even realize it. Along the lines of your post, my first week or so in college, a couple guys came into my room to talk about 'chicks' and the knew I was the floor's lady man and they wanted to hear my strategy. LOL It was tricky to get out of b/c I wasn’t ready to come out, but it was an interesting insight into the minds of (young) hetero men.

    Oh, yeah - try being muscular and BLACK! That means stupid, ignorant, and probably been to jail. Then I speak and they can tell they got that wrong. And if we converse long enough for them to find out I'm a college graduate and a published writer, then they'll say something like, "Wow, looks AND brains - you've got it all." Which is always nice. icon_smile.gif

    Or Italian. Same assumptions made there, with the exception of the jail part. People just assume you must be doing something illegal but haven't been caught/have paid someone off.

    I thought it was the blank, cross-eyed look on my face. Hmmm, I'll have to rethink a few of the rude encounters I've had.

    Yes, that attitude is out there. Rather than celebrating good things a person has, or the hard work they have done, lot's of people people feel compelled to find fault and critisize. Maybe even I do it sometimes.

    Even though it is THEIR problem, you don't have to be a victim. Speak up! Participate in decent conversations and just behave normally and people will right away know that you are not "dumb".

    Being pretty and dumb is such a boring cliche....

    I find it takes extra brain power to digest all the information required to get the results you want physically, especially if you don't develop easily (i.e. ectomorphs).

    But then there are some guys (mostly straight, LOL!) who don't know the first thing about proper technique or nutrition, yet get results nevertheless. I generally hope that physically well-developed people are well-developed upstairs, too - alas, sometimes I'm disappointedicon_cry.gif

    yes ... all the time ...

    people who don't know me always assume that i'm dumb ...

    until they get to know or my friends (who know me) tell them that i'm a cpa-lawyer ...

    most of the time i could see their faces that they find it hard to believe ...

    that i'm a cpa-lawyer ...

    well, this is who i am ...

    i'm real ...

    and obviously, it's not my fault if i look muscular ... or athletic ... or attractive ...

    i guess i am just lucky ... lol ...

    you can ask my boyfriend ...

    my boyfriend knows me so well ...

    cheers !!! icon_biggrin.gif

    Friends and associates would never assume I was dumb - but I can guess an enemy might be apt to suggest I am spoiled, overindulged, vindictive....etc, etc.!!!! But dumb? I've never been accused of that one!

    People are constantly surprised that I have the following attributes because I have a fairly masculine, down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach to things:

    - that I have a sense of humour (I work in finance);
    - that I like "Sex and The City" as well as "Hockey Night In Canada";
    - that I am well read (how many people can actually say they loved "War And Peace" let along read it);
    - that I love animals and like helping people and don't constantly swear and talk about how much I had to drink last night;
    - that I know what is going on around the world;
    - that I can think logically but also outside the box;
    - that I know so many obscure facts;
    - that I have a sensitive side to my nature.

    Hmmmmmm...evidently, I am not any of those 3 because I have the opposite problem. People immediately peg me as intelligent...and things I say come across as gospel.

    A lot of the athletic guys I've known have been jocks-- rowing teammates-- and some were very smart and some were very, very dumb. I normally don't assume that a good-looking/athletic/muscular guy is stupid. But having opened their mouths, some prove themselves to be extraordinarily so. And then any attraction I had goes out the window.

    To some people the total combination of "muscular, athletic and attractive" equates to gay so, o.k. that's a label I'll gladly accept!

    You do look stupid (not really, but you're hot).

    people always think I'm super smart (which I am), but in gay bars they tend to think I'm a dumb blonde. Don't know why is that, maybe because you are meeting me after a cosmo or twoicon_confused.gif
