"In a letter to Zabel, Dean of Students Brian Cole asked her to remove the photo or face possible expulsion from on-campus living. "I appreciate your move towards honesty and being the real you, but I'm going to have to insist that you change your Facebook banner picture," wrote Cole in the letter obtained by FOX 2 "'Out...Proud...Lesbian' is not really consistent with the heritage of Rochester College and has proven to already be disruptive among fellow students who are really bothered by it."

Maybe she should ask the college to remove the term 'Christian' from their Facebook page. After all, it's not really consistent with that whole 'only Baby Jesus can judge' matra; and it's probably disruptive among fellow Christians who are tired of being stereotyped because of asshat douchebags like this guy.

I can't imagine why any gay person would go to a Christian college in the first place. And I speak as a Christian.

Well if its a private college they can do what they want and this student has to know that as a private college they can say what you can and cant do. She prob signed some code of ethics agreement like the basketball player at BYU who had sex before marriage and had that whole issue.

Yet another reason that religion should be banned, and that gays should not support such dogmatic superstitions.

i was thinking the same thing.

Christian schools are the absolute WORST.

my friend got kicked out of a christian school for drinking beer

and another one of my friends was kicked off his team for having sex (with a woman). Why do people openly choose to go to these schools?

the school isn't at fault for this...she's the one who decided to go there. That's like me going to a gay bar and getting upset with management that guys are kissing eachother.

I am pretty sure that is what it is in this case. She is only 19 and sounds as if she just recently came out. The parents may be the ones paying her tuition and maybe this is really her plea to get out of the college. Oakland University, a state run college, is just a couple miles from this college and that might be her best option as it is unlikely she is going to get them to change their policy on this, although they have eased a bit on their position since the original letter from the dean once she went to the press.

So the school checks on her facebook page? Wow, she has the freedom to do whatever she wants. What if she wasn't a lesbian and she just decided to put that up for fun?

You know, it would be interesting to see if many fellow students facebook or twitter posts contained daily foul language or even links that may go against a Christian Code of morals and ethics. I'm sure there are some students who openly mention drinking and partying the previous night. Is the school willing to go through every students on line social network to prove her behavior is any more disruptive to the school and it's herritage while the other lesbians attending remained in the closet to let her take the heat? Those who have attended a Christain College will tell you the shit that goes on behind those gates could make for a damn good juicy novel. The amounts of monies given through private donations would be gone in a hot second.

Uh, I went to a private Catholic university out of my own will and not being closeted, because of the school's high academic level, stunningly beautiful campus and super small class sizes. 99% of my teachers were atheist and awesome, we had a thriving LGBT organization and I never once felt oppressed.

So your college allowed and aknowledged affiliation with the LGBT organization?

I think in her situation her private chirstian college rejects the support of the LGBT community. I know of one Christian College that allows it's students to vocalize their support of the gay community but yet any student that claims they are gay is told they must not act on that desire while in attendance and over all the school holds strong to what they believe is an abomination in the eyes of God. So they allow their students the freedom to show support but not to engage. Sorta like telling a fat girl you can like cookies but if you eat them? Heffer you're outta here.

Like many institutions it's one that has rules of conduct, and dress. Now they many not care that she is an out and proude lesbian. But if she is dragging the school into her political agenda on sexuality, via face book. They may have every right to do so. I have known of heterosexual Christin school teachers, who were dismissed for shaking up together; it was in breach of their contract, just as students in Oz and maybe America to, have too take out contracts with the school they wish to attend; it just give religus phobs another excuse to hate, when in fact it is the young womens political agenda that may well be really the issue at hand, more so than her being a young dyke.

Some uppity cunt on the student council probably brought it to the school's attention. I'm Christian, but there's nothing worse than people using religion to promote their own bigotry. If they were truly following Christian teachings, they would let her stay in the school, pray for her and just leave her alone.

But whatever, I just wanted to say "uppity cunt". It's recently become my new favorite phrase.

I'm lost, how does my lack of Profile picture factor into what I said/ your reply? I just stated a fact; that it's a private college and they can make their own rules. I never said I agreed with it personally.

yeah, but thats Latino these days, .. Christianity is pretty much "extremist" in english-speaking America by comparison

Like, in my catholic school, we were taught evolution and islam as perfectly acceptable schools of thought....

The University of Detroit Mercy and Madonna University, the two Catholic colleges in the area of the Christian college in this story, would not have made an issue of a students off campus activities. I have known openly gay students at both of those colleges and they never had any problems and I've known gay faculty at University of Detroit. I don't want to make it sound like the administrators are liberal thinking at these Catholic universities, but showing up at a pride festival or a gay rights bumper sticker on your car is not going to get you kicked out of the dorms or expelled from the college. One thing to keep in mind about the term, "Christian College" or "Christian School" is that many of us use those terms to refer to schools associated with one of the Protestant denominations like Baptist, Presbyterian, or Church of Christ (the one in this case) and even though they are Christians, we just say "Catholic" if it's a Catholic school or college.

I attended a small Quaker based (it had come a long way and was pretty
broad by the time I arrived) liberal arts college (private institution) in Wichita
on almost a full scholarship. I have to tell you, I had a great time. It was probably what I absolutely needed at that point in my life. I've been pleased that the institution is much more open than what I could have imagined these days. I have a friend who graduated about 10 years ago is was very "out" while attending school there. He was very involved in student government and was accepted by the campus community at large. I can't imagine any Dean or
administrative official our my college ever doing something like this.... and if they did, I'd send a letter in denouncing the action.

Catholic? That's not really Christian anymore. (:

lookingforcars1> if its a private college they can do what they want

So you'd be OK if they kicked out someone based on skin color or ethnic background?

What you say is right, it's legal to discriminate against gay people.
That is a problem and needs to change.

I have an idea. Don't go to a Christian school if you don't like such idiotic policies. This is who they are and they're not going to change it just because the tide is shifting towards the acceptance of homosexuality. Same thing goes to the slut at Georgetown.
