What Happens When We Die?

Since we have such a diverse set of people on RJ, I was kinda curious to hear what you guys think happens when we die.

Some people may think of me as some religious troll or something but I am seriously curious. I've read books like Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven by Mark Twain and had thoughts about the matter for a while now and also discussed with lots of people what they think and it always varies. I tend to hear less and less about the described 'heaven' of singing hymns all day and angels flying around and all that jazz.

So, what do you guys think happens when we die? I think there is an afterlife in a sense but I don't think we can comprehend it right now on this level of existence.

That's exactly what I think.

There is only one way to find out. Continue to develop biotechnical and biomechanical devices and interfaces which ultimately will allow for consciousness to transfer and "live" in a non-human creation. Then, when the biological vessel known as a "body" ceases to function due to the organic nature and limited lifespan of these carbon based hand me downs, a person can then know what it looks like and feels like to "die" even though their consciousness could potentially live on forever.

This has all happened before and it will all happen again.

Anders was the hottest "skin job".

Simple - With the immune system shut down and not able to fight them off anymore, bacteria and fungi throughout the body begin the process of decomposition. In a dry enough place, eventually dust (discounting for simplicity the role of worms, arthropods, and hungry vertebrates). (Dust to dust.)

Well I think there is a heaven but nobody ever gets there. you die and your spirit rises to the sky but as soon as it touches a cloud it turns into rain. so nobody's ever seen heaven. so if people end up in heaven then i guess we're in hell.

We die, we're dead. That's it.

My answer is really think back to before you were born. When I do its a big black hole of nothingness that you cant even fathom. That's what i think happens after you die.

gosh it's tempting to say that the afterlife is just one continuous loop of "Liza with a Z" . . .

. . . but seriously folks, the best minds in the world can't define consciousness (you know, the kind we currently experience, or think we do), so how can one speculate about a supranatural or extranatural awareness slash consciousness?

. . . and, as I have noted before, no one on the planet can tell you what a human is . . . so there is a gigantic a priori problem . . .

This is scary I thought of it last night, its a tough question though yet very questioning.

I have no black and white materials to the answer , but I do believe in incarnation where we are born again depending on the right time-line of manifestation of ones desires.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On being science fiction :

On the other hand I do think there is a place afterlife. Probably we are reborn on the other side of the galaxy with different planetary system. They say everything exist with a twin substance -ve +ve, like looking at mirror there is this other half of you but being the real you. Not knowingly earth has its twin brother on the other side of the milky way.

You are asking this question given your genetic ancestry and history? That fascinates me. I want to hear more from you on this issue. What do you think happens when our physical bodies stop functioning?

That seems very true. We were all in our mother's womb but we don't remember it. However, I believe we are given a soul after being released and the soul gets released from the body when it shuts down

Hmmm. a soul? Countless investigators have looked and measured, but never detected one. Of course one could imagine one, but could not rationally establish that souls exist.

What do you think happens with a cow when it dies? Or a chimpanzee that functions the almost exact same way as we do (except less "optimized").
How about someone with a down syndrome?

There's probably no sense in romaticizing about any hypothesis for a decent guy/gal that doesn't make sense for a similar being as well.
This is a physical world, the rest are wishes.

After you die, your memories will be permanently erased.
If you hurt a certain part of your brain, certain memories (or functions) may get erased. That's because we don't just use our brains, we are our brains.
So when our brains stop working, there's little hope of ever living again.

I don't believe in reincarnation because I don't think there's anything that happens when a person dies that would cause it.
When people die, nothing nice happens in return. Otherwise would be like saying that when people get mugged, they are more likely to get a job or win a lottery.
Maybe if an event that produced a person A happened, it could happen again, but will person A's original conscience live again or is that wishful thinking again?

It's possible we only have one life, be it as a snake, a cow or a human and that's it.
As far as I know that may be the most realistic view.

So not true dude... The same atoms in your body have been here since they precipitated out of the stars billions of years ago. In a sense you have always been here and always will be here. Even if selfawareness is just a side effect of the universe at this junction in time, there will still be something after you. You will get recycled back into the ecosystems on Earth, and will one day when the sun blows up, you will go back out into the stars. Entropy will increase for billions and billions of years to come until the next phase of the universe begins... Who knows what can happen when you span the edges of infinity...

I just think we stop existing, I don't believe in souls, once we die, that's it, our consciousness stops, and we stop existing, we can't watch our love ones or guide them. I know it sounds bleak, but unfortunately that's what i think will happens once i die.

I believe that the heart does go on.

Actually, our energy gets recycled into new life, it's the circle of life.

Didn't y'all watch movies in the 90's?

Read these books:

Journey of Souls (1994) - Michael Newton

Destiny of Souls (2000) - Michael Newton

If you really want to know these would be a great launch pad.
Cheers

Life for others goes on....

So make the most of your life! Live your life as you want to live. Be the person you want to be. Try to accomplish want you want to accomplish. Attempt to leave the World a little better.

Too many people try to make something very simple to understand overly complicated. Stick with logic and facts and it is pretty easy to see. It is only when you confuse it with science fiction, fantasy, mythology and/or religion that it becomes unclear.
